The Creighton Blue Jays earned their first win of the season as they easily dispatched the North Texas Mean Green 71-51 on Friday.
Preseason Wooden Award candidate Doug McDermott led all players with 21 points and 10 rebounds as he recorded his first double-double of the year. He was 6-for-11 from the field and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.
The Bluejays took a comfortable 39-25 lead into halftime and never really looked back from there. Guards Austin Chatman and Avery Dingman added 11 and 10 points as the Bluejays held North Texas to just 32.4 percent shooting from the field.
North Texas struggled with all aspects of shooting. They were only 2-for-17 from the 3-point line and shot only 5-10 from the free throw line. Only forward Tony Mitchell had a game worth remembering, scoring 18 points and garnering eight rebounds. His eight rebounds helped diminish the advantage on the boards for Creighton who only outrebounded North Texas by two.
Creighton struggled from the 3-point line as well, shooting a shade under 28 percent but was 18-for-22 from the free throw line and shot 48 percent from the field.
