After leaving Sunday night's game against the Portland Trail Blazers, the Dallas Mavericks announced on Monday that starting small forward Shawn Marion sprained his MCL. He will be out with the injury for the rest of the week and will be re-evaluated at the beginning of next week, via CBS Sports' Zach Harper:
The Dallas Mavericks announced today that an MRI confirmed forward Shawn Marion has a sprained left medial collateral ligament (MCL). He will be listed as out tomorrow and will not travel with the team to New York and Charlotte later this week. He will be re-evaluated next week.
Marrion's defense and rebounding will likely be the hardest thing to replace and according to Harper, the team will likely turn to either rookie forward Jae Crowder or veteran forward Vince Carter to fill in the gap. This comes after Dirk Nowitzki had to undergo knee surgery in the preseason and is scheduled to miss the first month of the regular season and is another hit to the Mavericks' depth.
The Mavericks take on the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night at home and then travel to New York to play the Knicks on Friday and then Saturday to Charlotte to play the Bobcats. Marion will not be traveling with the team over the weekend.
