The Texas Longhorns lead the Iowa St. Cyclones 14-0 at the end of the first quarter in Austin. Both defenses controlled much of the first quarter, forcing punts on the first three series of the game.

After forcing a three-and-out, Longhorns quarterback David Ash and the offense took over on their own 27 yard line. Ash quickly went to work, hitting Mike Davis for a 10 yard completion. Ash completed all three of his passes on the drive, including a 13 yard completion to running back Johnathan Gray. Cyclones' Jared Barnett was also flagged for a personal foul on the play, putting the ball on the Cyclones 21 yard line. Gray scored on a six yard run two plays later to give the Longhorns a 7-0 lead.

The Longhorns forced another three-and-out. Texas got the ball back on their own 39 yard line and that's when Ash again hooked up with Davis, this time for a 61 yard touchdown.

The Cyclones looked poised to score on their next drive when Longhorns Defensive Back Carrington Byndom intercepted a Steele Janz pass at the Texas seven yard line to set up another Longhorn drive to end the quarter.
