NBA Standings 2012: Mavericks Currently Holding Down Eighth Spot In Western Conference

The Dallas Mavericks currently sit in the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with a 10-7 record. That places them with a half game lead over the Portland Trail Blazers and the suddenly red hot Houston Rockets. After defeating the Hornets on Saturday, the Mavericks will open a three-game home stand against Phoenix, Minnesota and Utah. Dirk Nowitzki is expected to miss all of those games with a sore knee.

Western Standings

GP W-L PCT
Oklahoma City Thunder 16 13-3 .813
Denver Nuggets 17 12-5 .706
Los Angeles Clippers 13 8-5 .615
Memphis Grizzlies 15 9-6 .600
Utah Jazz 15 10-5 .667
Los Angeles Lakers 17 10-7 .588
San Antonio Spurs 17 10-7 .588
Dallas Mavericks 17 10-7 .588
Houston Rockets 16 9-7 .563
Portland Trail Blazers 16 9-7 .563
Minnesota Timberwolves 16 7-9 .438
Phoenix Suns 15 6-9 .400
Sacramento Kings 17 6-11 .353
Golden State Warriors 15 5-10 .333
New Orleans Hornets 16 3-13 .188

A quick look at the Southwest Division shows the Mavericks tied for second with the San Antonio Spurs and only percentage points behind Memphis for the division lead. Given the Mavericks rough start to the season head coach Rick Carlisle has to be pleased but keeping that pace up if Nowitzki's injury lingers could become a challenge.
