Mack Brown and his Longhorns suffered their first bit of significant attrition, losing linebacker Demarco Cobbs to a broken arm and seeing Connor Wood transfer to Colorado. Cobbs, a true sophomore from Tulsa, had been having an excellent training camp and was expected to contribute significantly to a strong linebacking corps.
Wood was a highly regarded recruit in 2010. He redshirted last season while Case McCoy backed up Garrett Gilbert, but he was never able to make up ground in the quarterback competition in the spring and summer, seemingly finishing fourth of four competitors and being passed by true Freshman David Ash. Gilbert won the starting job, at least for the Rice game, and will be backed up by McCoy and Ash. The two backups could see time on the field with play and personnel packages designed to fit their respective skill sets.
