FC Dallas Avenges MLS Cup Loss, Defeats Colorado Rapids 3-0

(Sports Network) – David Ferreira scored twice and FC Dallas downed the Colorado Rapids, 3-0, on Friday in a rematch of last season’s Major League Soccer Cup final at Pizza Hut Park.

Colorado edged FC Dallas, 2-1, in extra time to win the MLS Cup last year, but 2010 MVP Ferreira scored his first two goals of the year to lead Dallas to its first win of the new season.

Ugo Ihemelu also scored for Dallas (1-2-1), which had scored just one goal in its first three matches. Colorado (3-1-0), which scored eight goals to win its first thee games, lost for the first time this season.

Dallas opened the scoring off a corner kick in the 26th minute. After Colorado failed to clear, Marvin Chavez won a header on the right side to send the ball back into the middle, where Ihemelu slotted home for his first goal this year.

Chavez suffered a gash above his left eye and a concussion in a collision with a Colorado player on the play, and left the match minutes later, but it didn’t bother Dallas on the field.

Ferreira doubled the lead in the 40th minute, timing his run perfectly to open space on the left side and reach Fabian Castillo’s through ball. Ferreira then settled and chipped over Rapids goalie Matt Pickens from close range.

Dallas added its third goal in the opening minute of the second half when Eric Avila – who replaced Chavez – drove a cross into the six-yard box to Ferreira, who slid to direct the ball inside the left post.

Colorado will try to bounce back Wednesday at Real Salt Lake. FC Dallas visits the expansion Portland Timbers on April 17.
