Jason Garrett: HC/OC

Blogging the Boys has a recap of the Jason Garrett to head coach press conference. It includes this little nugget:

Also making news was Jason Garrett’s emphatic answer of “Yes” when asked about a dual role of head coach and offensive coordinator.

I’m not sure I like this. Beyond just my lack of confidence in Garrett’s playcalling, which hopefully won’t start another argument right now, it’s adding an extra job on the sidelines. Garrett won’t be in the booth to observe the plays from a full view, like most coordinators do, and his head coaching duties will be in the way of his playcalling duties and vice versa.

Truthfully, I doubt it is a big deal. Coaches have won while calling plays before, which John Gruden immediately coming to mind. If I’m wrong about Garrett’s playcalling, this may be a small issue at most, and perhaps a non-existent one. We’ll see, but it does make me uneasy. Even if it’s only small hindrance, the Cowboys could use every edge than can get, and I would think bringing in a competent and dedicated offensive coordinator would help.
