Australian Open 2011: Federer Survives Five Set Match

Roger Federer survived a second-round scare in the 2011 Australian Open. The defending champion and current No. 2 seed needed all five sets to defeat Gilles Simon on Thursday, defeating the Frenchman 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the third round. Federer will now play Xavier Malisse in the third round.

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal will take on American Ryan Sweeting in his second-round match, scheduled to take place at 11 AM on Thursday - Melbourne local time.

Other notables playing on Thursday in early-round matches include fourth-seeded Robin Soderling, seventh-seeded David Ferrer and 20th-seeded John Isner.

On the women's side, second-seeded Vera Zvonareva, third-seeded Kim Clijsters, and Australian born fifth-seeded Samantha Stosur are slated to play on Thursday as well.
