Three Weeks, Three Starting Running Backs For University Of Texas

The Texas Longhorns said today that Fozzy Whittaker, fresh off of a strong performance in Austin against Wyoming, will start next weekend in Lubbock.

"We really would like somebody to take over and run with it, but we're going to continue to evaluate game footage and yack yardage and plays," [offensive coordinator Greg] Davis said. "Fozzy [Whittaker] had explosive runs and played with great vision [Saturday]. His biggest problem since he's been [at Texas] has been injuries and we haven't been able to keep him on the field."

After losing some weight in the offseason, Cody Johnson won the starting job heading into the season, but a sluggish performance coupled with strong running by Tre Newton won Newton the starting job against Wyoming. Senior Vondrell McGee still isn't eligible to play, so the job may have to bounce around among these three all season.

The Longhorns have revisited a more traditional running game this year with Garrett Gilbert running the show and stellar recruit Malcolm Brown headed to Austin to steal the show in 2011.
