The Alex Cora Signing

Earlier this week, the Rangers signed Alex Cora and sent him to AAA Oklahoma City with the intent of having him join the Rangers sometime next week. I know Kinsler is hurt, Guzman is hurt and Arias sucks, but really? Alex Cora? Cora isn't going to add too much to the Rangers. With the Mets, he posted a -7 DRS (Defensive Runs Saved) at 2B which is pretty ugly. Joaquin Arias in his limited time has posted a -1 DRS with a 2.9 UZR/150. Cora, by contrast, has a -1 UZR/150.

Overall, Cora has a -.5 WAR and Arias a -.2 WAR. Neither are good players. Both are clearly below average. I just don't understand why, with Kinsler's return looming - as well as Guzman's should Kinsler need a bit longer - why Cora is necessary to add to the roster. There's no shortage of below average infielders with the Rangers.

Yeah, I'm harping on a player that might get all of 40-50 at bats with the Rangers, but that's 40-50 at bats he's taking away from somebody more deserving. It's hard to call Arias more deserving, especially since everybody wanted to crucify him earlier this week, but Alex Cora is not the answer even in an extremely limited role.

Just get back soon, Kinsler.
