Seems to be official now, so it gets its own post. Please feel free to vent or celebrate in the comments.
The Rangers will get maybe the best pitcher in baseball this season, and with the awesome track record to back it up. It absolutely makes things better.
But I don’t think it was worth Justin Smoak. Over what the Rangers have been getting from the back of their rotation, Lee is probably worth 3 or 4 wins going forward, but Smoak was a good bet to be worth a win or so, and the Rangers were already more than likely headed to the postseason.
The Rangers didn’t just give up a prospect, they created a hole going forward on the Major League squad, and they lose the next several years of cost-controlled talent for three months of performance. Further, the chances of advancing in October are improved, but I still don’t think this makes the Rangers the favorable team against any probable first round opponent.
I just don’t think it’s worth it. I’m really excited about Cliff lee going forward, but the only way I’m going to be happy about this move down the line is if the Rangers bring home a World Series trophy. And I just don’t think that’s likely, even after Lee.
Hopefully I’m wrong.
