Konrad Schmidt clears waivers, outrighted to Triple-A by Rangers

Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE

After being claimed off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Nov. 1, the 28-year-old backstop has been assigned to Triple-A Round Rock.

The Texas Rangers announced Friday that catcher Konrad Schmidt has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to the club's Class AAA affiliate, Round Rock.

The 28-year-old Schmidt, who was claimed off waivers by the Rangers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Nov. 1, will receive an invite to major league spring training in Surprise, Arizona.

Schmidt appeared in four games for the Diamondbacks last season, but spent most of the year as a member of the Triple-A Reno Aces, where he hit .277 with seven home runs and 47 RBI in 93 games. He was signed by the Diamondbacks as an undrafted free agent in 2007, and has spent his entire professional career in the Arizona organization. In eight career minor league games, Schmidt has logged only 15 at-bats, one hit and two RBI.

After assigning Schmidt to Round Rock, the Rangers have 39 players on their 40-man roster, and are slated to invite 14-non-roster players to major league spring training.
