Rangers acquire Padres P Cory Burns for player to be named later

Christopher Hanewinckel-US PRESSWIRE

Texas picked up a 25-year relief pitcher who struggled as a rookie in San Diego but who does have some impressive minor league statistics under his belt.

According to a report from ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the Rangers acquired Padres relief pitcher Cory Burns for a player to be named later on Wednesday.

Burns, a 6'0 205 right hander, had a 5.50 ERA with 18 strikeouts on 10 walks in 18 innings as a rookie last season. San Diego designated him for assignment earlier in the off-season, creating an opportunity for Texas to swoop in for the trade.

Despite his struggles in the majors, Burns does have a decent minor-league track record. An 8th round draft pick of the Indians in 2009, the 25-year old has a career ERA of 2.36 in 191 minor-league innings.

This is likely to be one of many low-cost moves the Rangers make in an effort to fortify their bullpen, which will probably lose several key contributors to free agency this off-season.

The identity of the prospect San Diego received is still unknown, but it's unlikely to be anyone of much note.
