Texas Vs. New Mexico: Weak Non Conference Schedule Continues

The Longhorns face another tomato can on Saturday, as they host an MWC program with a brand-new coach and only three wins in the last three seasons.

How good are the new-look Texas Longhorns in 2012? We may not have much of an idea until their Sept. 29 road date at defending Big 12 champion Oklahoma State, as Mack Brown isn't exactly testing his young team in non-conference play this season.

After a relatively easy 37-17 home win over Wyoming last Saturday, they face another over matched non-BCS team in Austin this Saturday when the New Mexico Lobos come into town.

New Mexico is coming off the most disastrous three-year stretch in program history, with a combined record of 3-33 over that period. Former Notre Dame coach Bob Davie, who has worked as a TV announcer for the last decade, has taken over the reeling program.

The Lobos won their first game, 66-21, against Texas Southern, but all of the storylines in Saturday's game will revolve around the Longhorns, whose size and athleticism up front should overwhelm the bottom-tier MWC program. Expect to see a heavy dose of the Texas RB contingent, as well as a bigger role for highly-touted freshman Johnathan Gray.

However, the biggest point of interest will be the play of sophomore QB David Ash, who rebounded from a tough freshman campaign to complete 20 of 27 passes for 156 yards and 1 touchdown against Wyoming.
