TCU and Texas are both ranked in every major poll to start the 2012 college football season. The Horned Frogs range from No. 11 to No. 20, while the Longhorns check in between No. 9 and No. 17.
Jason Kirk, of SB Nation, compiled some of the more prominent rankings into a composite Top 25. Kirk's table has Texas at No. 13 with TCU at No. 17. The ratings used seven different polls:
Included in the composite Top 25 below are the coaches' and AP polls, BCS guru Samuel Chi's projected BCS standings (which contain the funniest fact out of everything included here -- there's a BCS computer that doesn't rank the Florida State Seminoles at all), the final preseason edition of SB Nation's BlogPoll (which logs polls from our dozens of college football communities), Football Outsiders' projected F/+ rankings, the SI.com Top 25*, and our own SB Nation Studios Top 25 Countdown (which was concocted via a secret formula less esoteric than the BCS').
The Longhorns and Horned Frogs will meet as Big-12 members for the first time on Nov. 22 in Austin.

SB Nation released its first BlogPoll of the new college football season, where all of the college football blogs on the network vote on their own collective Top 25 to rival the media ones. Two teams from Texas made the cut into the rankings.
Texas ended up getting a single first place vote and was slotted into the No. 16 rank with an 8.48 average score, while the TCU Horned Frogs ended up ended up at No. 20 with an average of 6.87 points from each ballot.
Interestingly, there was quite a bit of disagreement among the voters about both schools:
Now on to the extracurricular. First up are the teams which spur the most disagreement between voters as measured by standard deviation. Note that the standard deviation charts halt at No. 25 when looking for the lowest, otherwise teams that everyone agreed were terrible (say, UTEP) would all be at the top.
Texas, entering Year 2 of the Harsin Experiment, takes second, while TCU, which may see its season go up in smoke, comes in third.

For the first time in its history, the Senior Bowl has released a watch list of players that could be featured in the annual college football all-star game. Between the Texas Longhorns, SMU Mustangs and the TCU Horned Frogs, eight players earned spots on the list.
Three wide receivers, one from each team, earned spots on the list as Texas WR Marquise Goodwin, TCU WR Skye Dawson and SMU WR Darius Johnson all were named on the list. Joining them was SMU RB Zach Line, TCU OL Blaize Foltz, Texas DE Alex Okafor, SMU DE Margus Hunt and Texas S Kenny Vaccaro.
The Senior Bowl is college football's most prestigious all-star game and is attended by NFL coaches, scouts and talent evaluators as they prepare for the NFL Draft.

The TCU Horned Frogs received a fairly high-profile addition on Tuesday, as former Florida Gators wide receiver Ja'Juan Story elected to transfer to TCU.
Story, a former four-star recruit who redshirted in 2012, chose TCU over the Central Florida Knights. He will sit out the 2012 season and have three years of eligibility remaining.
At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, Story has great size for a receiver and is the type of recruit who could make a big impact for the Horned Frogs as they jump from the Mountain West to the Big 12.
The presence of quarterback Casey Pachall, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound junior who emerged as a star in his first year replacing former Horned Frogs star Andy Dalton, may have made Story's decision easier, as he'll have the opportunity to work with an NFL-bound QB for at least one season in Fort Worth.
The move to the Big 12 has clearly lifted TCU's national profile, as Story is the latest former four- or five-star recruit to join head coach Gary Patterson's program in the last few months, following RB Aaron Green (Nebraska) and CB David Jenkins (LSU).

Texas Longhorns co-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin said Monday that both David Ash and Case McCoy will play against Wyoming in the first game of the season, according to Max Olson of ESPN.
The Longhorns played both quarterbacks last season and struggled to find consistency at the position, although it was widely considered that Ash would take control of the starting job in the offseason. With the news that both will play and the actual starter currently not known, it appears that there is little separation between the two players.
Wescott Eberts of Burnt Orange Nation doesn't like the decision, not one bit.
In some sense, as a big and unabashed David Ash fan, it's extremely disappointing that he hasn't seized control of the position, which hasn't happened according to anything that the coaches are saying publicly. Or maybe it just means that the new and improved McCoy is throwing the football better now with his increased strength. Maybe his footwork isn't even dog feces most of the time now. Maybe he could be a serviceable starter.
Thing is, serviceable as upside is not upside at all. It's the definition of mediocrity.
Eberts points out that Harsin made similar comments before the Holiday Bowl last season, and David Ash ended up playing the entire game for the Longhorns.

College football voters for the Associated Press released their preseason AP Top 25 poll with the Texas Longhorns ranked No. 15 followed by TCU at No. 20.
Texas starts the season in a solid position among pollster following a disappointing 8-5 season last year. The Longhorns ranking makes them third among Big 12 teams in the eyes of the voters with Oklahoma leading the way at No. 4 and West Virginia at No. 11. The AP ranking matches the No. 15 ranking for Texas in the USA Today Coaches' poll.
After moving from the Mountain West Conference, TCU will begin their 2012 Big 12 campaign ranked No. 20, one slot behind Oklahoma State and two ahead of Kansas State, giving the conference six teams in the AP Top 25 rankings. The Horned Frogs are ranked ahead of the Cowboys in the USA Today Coaches' poll at No. 17. TCU and Texas will face each other in Austin on November 24th.
At the top of the poll, USC is ranked No. 1 followed by SEC powers Alabama at No. 2 and LSU at No. 3.

The first AP Poll of the season is going to be released on Saturday at 9 a.m. local time, and the big question is where Texas and TCU be ranked when the first batch of rankings are made public.
A good place to start would be the Coaches' Poll, where the Texas Longhorns were picked at No. 15 while the No. 17 spot belonged to TCU. There usually isn't much disparity between the two polls, so fans can expect to be in the ballpark of their coach's ratings.
Another gauge is the SB Nation Studios Top 25 Countdown, which has TCU as the No. 11 team in the nation heading in to the 2012 season with the Longhors coming in at No. 13.
Of course there is no perfect way to gauge the media poll before it is released, but all signs point to the Horned Frogs and Longhorns beginning the season in the Top 20.

The TCU Horned Frogs are ranked No. 21 in Sports Illustrated's 2012 preseason top 25, while the in-state power Texas Longhorns come in at No. 15.
The Horned Frogs, without question, have endured a turbulent offseason after finishing the 2011 season with an 11-2 record and final AP ranking of No. 14. However, they return quarterback Casey Pachall and wide receiver Josh Boyce on offense - a duo that hooked up for nearly 1,000 yards last season. In addition, the defense welcomes back defensive end Stansly Maponga (nine sacks, five forced fumbles) and linebacker Kenny Cain (72 tackles).
The Oklahoma Sooners, West Virginia Mountaineers and Kansas State Wildcats also represented the Big 12 in SI's rankings, with OU being the highest-ranked team in the conference at No. 5. Meanwhile, West Virginia cracked the top 10 (at No. 10) and KSU comes in one spot behind Texas at No. 16. Alabama, USC, LSU, and Oregon round out the top five.

Texas Longhorn defensive linemen Alex Okafor and Jackson Jeffcoat were honorable mentions in SB Nation's 2012 Preseason All-American Team, voted by our college football bloggers.
Jeffcoat recorded 71 tackles during his sophomore season, and led UT with eight sacks and 21 tackles for loss. Okafor, a senior, tallied seven sacks and 58 tackles last season for the Longhorns and coach Mack Brown. The 6-foot-4, 265-pound end played in all 13 games and had 14 tackles for loss in 2011.
The duo fell short of making the All-American team, which was comprised of LSU defensive end Sam Montgomery and Michigan State's Williams Ghoston. Defensive tackles Kawann Short of Purdue and Star Lotulelei of Utah filled out the defensive line, as voted by the network's bloggers.

Place kicker Anthony Fera just transfered from Penn State to attend Texas, but after being on campus for just a short time has a setback this fall camp. Fera had re-aggravated a groin strain, and at this time there is no set timetable for his return. A groin strain for a kicker is serious and can linger for a while, so for the time being Fera will be sidelined.
Texas was eager to land Fera since the kicking situation had no clear front runner, but now they are back to where they started and will now look at Ben Pruitt, William Russ, Michael Davidson, Nick Jordan, Nick Rose and possibly others.
Ideally Texas will not have to trot out anyone other than Fera, but they can ease in one of these kickers if needed since their first two games are not against top notch competition.

Texas Longhorns began fall camp this past week and it is widely speculated that David Ash is to be the starting quarterback, but that has not been confirmed. The challenger to the Ash for the starting spot is Case McCoy who split time last year with Ash.
In 2011, neither player played particularly well, but since then both players said they have matured and are more confident this time around as they believe they ready to take the reigns as the Texas starting quarterback.
Head coach Mack Brown is still waiting for one of the players to prove themselves, and is no rush to name a starter:
"When they make the decision for us, then we'll make it," Brown said. "I'm not panicked when it's done. The worst thing you can do is make a decision when it's not ready."
With the fall practices being closed to the public and the media there will be no first hand information about the quarterback challenge.

The Texas Longhorns got a major late-season addition to their kicking game on Tuesday, as former Penn State kicker Anthony Fera decided to transfer closer to his childhood home in Houston in the wake of the devastating series of sanctions handed down to the Nittany Lions program in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.
Over at Burnt Orange Nation, Wescott Eberts is ecstatic about the move:
Just how important is adding a kicker? The Longhorns have won eight games on last-second kicks in the Mack Brown era, with no misses. As the game against Texas A&M proved last fall, and all those other games have proved in other years, having a reliable kicker late in the game is crucial to pulling out those victories.
Fera was a Lou Groza semifinalist and Ray Guy candidate as a sophomore for Penn State, where he handled kicking and punting duties. He'll have two years of eligibility in Austin.

Despite two consecutive down years for Mack Brown's program, UT is still highly regarded coming into the 2012 season.
With the start of the college football season right around the corner, the first edition of the coaches poll is out, and the Longhorns are ranked No. 15 in the country.
They're two points ahead of No. 17 TCU, entering their first year in the Big 12.
The conference, as a whole, did fairly well, placing the second most teams (6) behind only the SEC (7) in the top 25.
Oklahoma, the pre-season favorite, checks in at No. 4 and TCU's fellow newcomer West Virginia, fresh off a 70-point showing in the 2012 Orange Bowl, is at No. 11. Oklahoma State, fresh off their first Big 12 title in school history, is at No. 19 while Kansas State rounds it out at No. 21.
And with Robert Griffin III now in the NFL, Baylor is one of several schools appearing in the also receiving votes category to start the 2012 season.

Projected Texas Longhorns starting quarterback David Ash suffered a hamstring injury during an off season workout, but the severity of the injury was not known at the time. Sean Adams of HornsNation is reporting that the injury, is officially being called a strain, will put Ash on day-to-day status.
Texas begins fall camp at the end of the week on Aug. 5 and while Ash is currently projected to be the starter this upcoming season, with this injury it will keep the competition open for a little bit longer. Case McCoy is the other option at quarterback, and depending on how healthy Ash is could determine if McCoy can keep his name in the running to be the Texas' starting quarterback.
With the injury being minor it probably will not affect the quarterback race, unless Ash has a set back to his injury during fall camp.

According to multiple sources, projected Texas Longhorns starting quarterback David Ash suffered a hamstring injury in workouts on Friday. Texas had multiple problems at the quarterback position ever since Colt McCoy left for the NFL a few years ago, and last year they used Ash and Case McCoy with limited success.
The length of Ash's injury is unknown at this point, but it has to be a setback due to the lack of success the team has had. However, a hamstring injury can possibly linger for a long period of time, so Ash needs to make sure he is completely healed before he exerts himself too much in fall camp.
Texas begins fall camp in just over a week, and if Ash is to miss time it will give an opportunity for McCoy to handle the first team offense, and possibly take over the starting quarterback position.

According to a report from William Wilkerson of Horns Nation, Penn State senior K Anthony Fera has contacted the Texas coaching staff about possibly transferring.
Fera, a native of Houston, is one of the top kickers in the country, and he could be an excellent fit for a Longhorn program looking to replace Justin Tucker.
In 2011, Fera handled punts, field goals and kickoffs for the Nittany Lions. After going 14-17 on field goals and averaging 42 yards on punts, he's a candidate for both the Ray Guy (punter) and Lou Groza (kicker) Awards in the 2012 season.
Due to the crippling sanctions handed down as part of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, all Penn State players have the right to transfer immediately to another D1 program, who can go over the 85-scholarship limit to take them on.
Taking Fera would cost Texas a scholarship in the 2013 recruiting class, but taking on a veteran kicker may be worth it, especially if the offense struggles again this season.

At the Big 12 Media Days, Baylor Bears head coach Art Briles addressed the media on his expectations for the 2012 college football season. While he talked about the new players such as running backs Jarred Salubi and Glasco Martin, the big question on the media's mind on Tuesday with Art Briles was what is life going to be without Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III at Baylor.
So what we have to do is figure out ways to fill in the gaps, because Robert created a bunch of gaps. His ability from somebody else's is a big gap. We have to fill that in with a variety of different methods, schematically, personnel-wise and motivational-wise and inspiration-wise that will give us an opportunity to stay at the level we finished at last year
He also addressed how the future of the program could be dealt with regardless of Griffin exiting the program. Briles says that he plans on riding this momentum that Griffin had put Baylor on as long as possible.
The other part, we're going to live on that as long as we can, and rightfully so. Because when I talk to recruits, they're not asking about, Coach, how are you doing, boy, sure would like to come visit, or saying, Coach, tell me about R.G. III, let me know me how's he doing, how's he going to be, how's he going to do in the NFL. We're going to continue doing that
The Bears are coming off one of their best seasons, so this season will be a good indication on the long-term success of this football program.

In the aftermath of the NCAA's punishment of the Penn St. Nittany Lions football team, reports have been filtering out that there could be a possibility that the Baylor Bears could land a few of those players. Fox Sports Southwest analyst Matt Mosley tweeted today that Baylor head coach Art Briles told him that some players from Penn State have been in contact.
Art Briles confirmed that at least a couple Penn State players have contacted Baylor about transferring. BU coaching staff has PSU ties.

At the Big 12 Media Days in Dallas on Tuesday, Texas longhorns coach Mack Brown addressed the assembled reporters. Brown was asked about a variety of subjects, but his most glowing comments were reserved for defensive back Carrington Byndom.
Carrington will be one of the best defensive backs that we've had. He's smart. He's in great condition. He's very
confident. He doesn't say a whole lot. And that probably has hurt him some on the national scene. But he played a lot as a freshman for us. He started and had an outstanding year last year for us. He's a guy that can intercept the ball. He can make plays. He's physical. And I think that he will end up being one of
the better defensive backs in the country this year.
The other biggest revelation came on towards the end of his time. Brown was asked whether he foresees any change in offensive philosophy in the coming season to better keep up with the ubiquitous spread offense in the Big 12.
I think yes. I think what we'll do is we'll try to be balanced. We'll play to our confidence. We'll play to the guys that are performing the best and making the plays, but we felt like the biggest thing when we rushed the ball for 441 yards against Texas Tech and Kansas back to back last year and then lost both backs the next week with Missouri and lost Fozzy Whittaker and we were not able to throw the ball well enough to hang in there, and John Harris got hurt and Jaxon Shipley got hurt. We were pretty much crippled across the board in a lot of those different areas.
We feel like to win our league, which is what we want to do, we've got to be balanced and we've got to be able to throw it as well as run it. So we do not want to be a running football team. We'd like to be a team that can do both. And we feel like we've made so much progress in the running game that we can line up and run the ball just about every week.
But you're not going to be able to do that continuously against really good defenses unless you can throw it and keep them off balance.
Will the Longhorns make a statement in the conference this year? We're only a few months from finding out.

In the second year under their re-tooled coaching staff, expectations are high for the Texas Longhorns, but not quite as high as they have been for most of Mack Brown's tenure in Austin.
Texas was picked to finish third by the media in their pre-season poll, which would be a marked improvement from their 13-12 record over the last two seasons.
However, it's still below Oklahoma, as the Sooners received 32 of 41 first-place votes to finish on top of the Big 12.
Coming behind them is West Virginia, who received 7 first-place votes after coming over from the Big East. TCU, meanwhile, has been picked to finish 5th in their first year in the conference.
Baylor, in their first year without RG3, is now considered a mid-tier program, checking in at No. 7.

Three other Longhorns made the team -- DE Jackson Jeffcoat, RB Malcolm Brown and S Kenny Vaccaro. Texas finished behind only Oklahoma State (5) and Oklahoma (5), as none of the conference's ten teams pulled away from the pack in terms of selections.
Baylor had two selections, TE Jordan Navjar and OL Cyril Richardson, as the Bears try to continue the momentum from RG3's historic season in 2011.

The 2012 Davey O'Brien Award watch list is officially out and the race is now on for the greatest quarterback in all of college football. The good news for TCU is that Casey Pachall has been nominated, a sign of good things to come in a very difficult Big 12 schedule for the Horned Frogs.
Last year, the 6-5 sophomore quarterback threw for 2,921 yards and 25 touchdowns with only 7 interceptions to his name. His best performance of the season came in the highly touted game against Boise State where he threw 5 touchdowns and passed for 473 yards. Both were his high totals on the season.

Tevin Reese and Terrance Williams of Baylor, Mike Davis of the Texas Longhorns and TCU's Josh Boyce are among the top wide receivers in all of college football to watch this year as announced by the early watch list released for the 2012 Biletnikoff Award. All four receivers certainly hope the award stays within the Big 12 parameters this season as Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon has kept the award to himself the last two seasons -- a sign of just how dominant he was with the Cowboys.
As for Davis, he joins an elite group of the top receivers in football heading into the upcoming 2012 season. Great things are expected from Davis, a sophomore who has yet to break out. Last year, Davis had 45 catches for 609 yards and only 1 touchdown, so his inclusion speaks more to expectations than actual production.
Boyce had 61 catches last year for the Horned Frogs for a total of 998 yards and 9 touchdowns, and TCU will need major production from him in their first year in the Big 12.
As for Reese and Williams, both players have big shoes to fill in an offense that will miss Robert Griffin III and Kendall Wright among others. Luckily, the Bears still have playmakers at receiver like these two. Reese had 51 catches for 877 yards and 7 touchdowns last season. Williams, a senior, had 59 catches for 957 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The watch list for the 2012 Butkus Award was announced on Monday and one Dallas-area player found his name on it. Ja'Gared Davis, a senior linebacker from Southern Methodist, is among those who will be considered for the award.
As a junior in 2011, Davis had 83 tackles and 5.5 sacks. He has played in every game during his college career but 2011 was the first time he started every game.
A second-team all-conference member, Davis is expected to be one of the leaders of the Mustangs defense this season.
In the team's first three weeks, Davis will have two shots to show what he can do against BCS conference schools. SMU opens the season at Baylor and plays Texas A&M at home for the third week.
He would be the first player in school history to win the Butkus Award.

Under Mack Brown and Duane Akina, Texas has become known as "DB U", sending defensive backs to the NFL on an almost annual basis.
Senior safety Kenny Vaccaro will be carrying that mantle in 2012, as he was named to the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List, given annually to the nation's top defensive back. He would be the third Longhorn to win that award under Brown and Akina, following Michael Huff in 2005 and Aaron Ross in 2006.
Vaccaro, entering his third year as a starter, is expected to take a leadership role on a Texas defense trying to help return the Longhorns to national prominence after a 13-12 stretch in the last two seasons.
He's also considered one of the top NFL prospects in the country, as Archie Barberio explained in a scouting report for Vaccaro on SB Nation Dallas:
Vaccaro finally earned a full-time starting role at safety as a junior in 2011, starting in all 13 games. He registered 82 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, 8 pass breakups and 7 quarterback hits. Vaccaro is a very good strong safety prospect with a physical mentality who loves to hit, but he also has the athleticism and range to be a natural free safety in the NFL. Depending on what team drafts him, Vaccaro could play either safety position at the next level.
