Guard Sterling Gibbs Transfers From Texas To Seton Hall

Former Texas Longhorns men's basketball guard Sterling Gibbs made his transfer to another school official Thursday, as he committed to the Seton Hall Pirates. Gibbs, the younger brother of Pittsburgh Panthers star guard Ashton Gibbs, will now try to make his mark on the Big East Conference after playing just one season for the Longhorns.

The 6-foot-1 guard played sparingly for Texas in his first collegiate season, and will now go and try to fill the void of Pirates' point guard Jordan Theodore.

"I’ve had a great year at Texas," Gibbs said in a statement released by the university. "I’ve improved as a basketball player and as a person during my time here. If my decision had to do with basketball only, I would not be leaving Texas. But my decision is family-related and involves more than basketball."

Gibbs will be try to get a hardship waiver for the NCAA to make him eligible for the 2012-13 season

College Basketball Recruiting: Cameron Ridley Signs With Texas

After not signing with Texas during the early signing period last fall, McDonald's All-American center Cameron Ridley, the centerpiece of Rick Barnes' 2012 recruiting class, signed with Texas on Wednesday, April 12.

Ridley, a 6'10 230 center with an advanced low-post game, should step right into the Longhorns line-up with the graduation of Clint Chapman and Alexis Wangmene.

He joins a stacked recruiting class ranked No. 9 in the country by Rivals, which features two other four-star players in 6'10 PF/C Prince Ibeh from Garland, TX and 5'11 PG Javan Felix from New Orleans:

Ridley, who has a lot of size and a lot of game, is a post player who can anchor the attack on both ends. Highly athletic, Ibeh is a great interior complement to Ridley. Lammert, a skilled four man, adds depth to the frontline. He also has a heady point guard in Felix who can get him the ball and keep the defense honest with his shooting ability. Papapetrou, who is a skilled wing, rounds out the class.

With J'Covan Brown declaring for the NBA Draft and freshman PG Sterling Gibbs electing to transfer, Texas had an extra scholarship in the spring signing period, which they used on SG DeMarcus Holland, who announced his commitment last Sunday.

2012 SG DeMarcus Holland Commits to the Texas Longhorns

After taking an official visit to Austin this past weekend, 2012 combo guard DeMarcus Holland (Garland Naaman Forest) has committed to the Texas Longhorns, per his AAU Coach Lawrence Mann. Holland joins a signed class of Prince Ibeh, Connor Lammert, Javan Felix, and Ioannis Papapetrou. Texas also has a commitment from five-star center Cameron Ridley, the centerpiece of the 2012 class. Both Ridley and Holland are expected to sign in the Late Signing Period, starting April 11.

Holland is ranked as a three-star prospect by Rivals and Scout, and a two-star prospect by ESPN. Holland had previously been committed to the South Florida Bulls, but decommitted in late February after receiving interest from the Texas Longhorns. The Longhorns recently lost All-Conference shooting guard J'Covan Brown as an NBA Draft early entrant, and felt the need to add an additional player to its backcourt. Next year, Holland will join sophomore returnees Myck Kabongo, Julien Lewis, Sheldon McClellan, and Sterling Gibbs. Holland will compete for a backup role with Kabongo and Lewis expected to start at point guard and shooting guard, respectively.

This year, Holland and high school teammate Ibeh led Naaman Forest to a 29-8 overall record, 13-1 in District 10-5A play. Naaman Forest made it to the state semifinals before losing to eventual champion Flower Mound Marcus. Next year, Holland and Ibeh will remain teammates, playing for the Longhorns and head coach Rick Barnes.

The Longhorns have one more available scholarship for the 2012-13 team, and the staff is targeting five-star small forward Devonta Pollard, from Kemper County, Mississippi. Pollard is considering Texas as well as Alabama, Georgetown, and Missouri. He is expected to make a decision in late April. The Longhorns may also express interest in Tulsa shooting guard Jordan Clarkson, who has been considering a transfer after head coach Dave Wojcik was fired after seven seasons. Clarkson has not formally applied for a transfer, and consequently, Texas cannot formally contact Clarkson about playing for Texas next year.

J'Covan Brown Will Enter The NBA Draft

Junior guard J'Covan Brown will leave the Texas Longhorns one season early to enter the NBA draft, according to a statement released on the school's website.

Brown was 16th in the nation in scoring last season, averaging 20.1 points per game. He cited family reasons as to why he was entering the draft.

"There were a lot of reasons to come back to school next year, most importantly getting my degree and being around my teammates every day. But the time has come for me to pursue a career in professional basketball and take care of my daughter, Jordyn."

In Brown's final game at Texas, the Longhorns fell to Cincinnati, 65-59, in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Brown finished 19 points, five rebounds and six assists.

McDonald's All American Game Wrap Up: Texas Commit Cameron Ridley Impresses

Over at A Sea of Blue, SB Nation Dallas contributor Jeffrey Chao breaks down the 2012 McDonald's All American Game.

One of the players he was most impressed by was Texas commit Cameron Ridley, a 6'10 230 center from Fort Bend, Texas:

Best Big Man: Cameron Ridley (Texas)

This was a spirited battle, and seeing Ridley and opposing East starter DaJuan Coleman (Syracuse) go head to head was enjoyable. Coleman led the game in rebounds with 12, but Ridley was the highest scoring big, posting up 12 points. Isaiah Austin (Baylor) showed undeniable perimeter talent, and Tony Parker (undecided) was a load inside. Also, Arizona's future twin tower duo of Brandon Ashley and Grant Jerrett looked sneaky good.

In the end though, Ridley showed the most with a dazzling array of fundamentals. He started the game with a nifty post move (though he didn't finish), was excellent at rolling to the basket, and was one of the few bigs who felt comfortable enough handling at the perimeter. Most importantly, Ridley was a solid rebounder and the best defender, owning the paint better than his fellow bigs.

Despite playing in a game that is traditionally played at a very fast pace to the detriment of big men, Ridley scored 12 points on 5-10 shooting with 9 rebounds and 2 blocks.

If he could provide a legitimate answer at the center position, Texas could be a Top 10 team next season.

The Real Problem With Texas Basketball

It's not because players like J'Covan Brown continue to leave a year too early or because Rick Barnes can't coach them while they are on campus. The lack of consistent fan support makes having a Top 10 program nearly impossible.
