Texas vs. OU: Landry Jones' legacy still in the air

The Sooners QB has started at Norman for four years, but how he'll be remembered will be determined by the end of the 2012 season.

Landry Jones has been Oklahoma's starting quarterback for four years and nearly 40 games, yet his legacy in Norman is still unclear as he prepares for the final Red River Shootout of his career.

Jones stepped in for an injured Sam Bradford in 2009 and never looked back from there, steadily racking up nearly every passing record in OU history. He's passed for more than 13,000 yards and 100 touchdowns while OU has went 34-11 in his time in Norman.

However, here's the only stats that really matter to Sooners fans: OU has one Big 12 championship and one BCS bowl in Jones' first three years as a starting QB. And for a program that has run roughshod over the conference for most of the last decade, those numbers are a letdown.

Without Ryan Broyles, meanwhile, Jones' production has slipped significantly over his last dozen starts.

On Saturday, he'll be facing a Texas team with an unproven defense and a sophomore QB. If he can't lead the Sooners to a victory in Dallas, the calls for Blake Bell may soon begin to intensify.

It may not be totally fair, but that's the burden on a player who has become the face of the program that hasn't lived up to expectations recently.

David Ash would be wise to take notes.
