The allure of playing a high-quality opponent and a lucrative payday are likely to have played a large part in the decision.

The TCU Horned Frogs will open the 2013 season against Southeastern Conference powerhouse LSU at the Cowboy Classic, according to Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The Frogs were slated to play a home and home series against the Tigers in 2013 and 2014, but this development nixes the second meeting.

The allure of playing a top-ranked opponent at a neutral site is likely to have played a big role in the teams' decision to participate in the Cowboys Classic, but it's likely that money played a big factor as well. The Tigers earned $3.5 million by taking part in the 2011 game, according to the Sports Business Journal. This year's game saw Alabama and Michigan split a $9.4 million payday.

TCU (1-0) is currently ranked No. 16 in the AP Top 25, while LSU (2-0) is seated in the No. 3 spot with four first-place votes.
