SMU vs. Southern Miss score update: Mustangs leading 27-6 after 3 quarters

Stay connected for news and updates

SMU leads Southern Miss, 27-6, thanks to strong effort by the Mustangs defense through three quarters.

The Mustangs led 10-0 after the first quarter, thanks to a Garrett Gilbert 36-yard scramble on the opening drive of the game and a Chase Hover field goal late in the quarter. The Golden Eagles would take advantage of a short field to open the second quarter but the Mustangs would pull away, scoring 17 unanswered points and 14 in the final two minutes of the half.

The offense for both teams would dry up in the third quarter, however, with the SMU and Southern Miss combining for six total punts.

Garrett Gilbert is 21-of-35 for 182 yards and one touchdown as the SMU offense has leaned heavily on the running game, putting up 344 total yards of offense in the game. The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, have just 142 yards of offense in the game, making just eight first downs through three quarters.
