Western Conference Standings Update: Mavericks Holding On At Seventh

The Dallas Mavericks currently sit in seventh place in the Western Conference at 32-26, and a playoff berth is far from certain.

The middle of the Western Conference standings are a logjam. The Mavs are only two games behind the fifth-place Memphis Grizzlies, but they're also just two games ahead of the 10th-place Utah Jazz. Dallas has struggled on the road this season, and six of the Mavs' final eight games are on the road, so it's going to be tough, but only four of those games are against current playoff teams.

The Mavs are fourth in the Southwest Division, which has been all but wrapped up by the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs are one game behind the Oklahoma City Thunder for first in the Western Conference. Behind the Spurs are the Lakers and Clippers, but the final two spots for home-court in the first round still are up for grabs. The Mavericks have had one of the worst seasons by a defending champ in recent memory, and missing the playoffs would be a disaster.

Mavericks Vs. Kings: Dallas Takes Must-Win Game Against Kings 110-100

Entering Tuesday, the Mavericks were in seventh place in the Western Conference and the chance to defend their NBA championship was up in the air. The season is far from over, but Tuesday's 110-100 win over the Sacramento Kings was a game the Mavs could not afford to lose.

Of the Mavs' final nine games, only three are at home, and Dallas is just 11-16 on the road, so the Mavs need to win the home games. Tuesday's win against Sacramento leaves two home games on the schedule.

Six Mavericks scored at least nine points, led by 15 from Dirk Nowitzki and Rodrique Beaubois. Shawn Marion scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end. After missing the last four games due to a groin injury, Jason Kidd scored seven points, grabbed six rebounds and had seven assists in 22 minutes, although he only played eight minutes in the second half.

The Mavs led by seven at halftime, but couldn't pull away in the second half. The Kings got as close as five points in the fourth quarter, but Delonte West scored seven points in the final six minutes for the Mavs. DeMarcus Cousins finished with 25 points and 18 rebounds for the Kings.

Mavericks Vs. Kings Score Update: Strong Second Quarter Has Mavs Up 57-50 At Half

Fighting for their playoff lives, the Mavericks lead the Sacramento Kings 57-50 at halftime.

The Kings jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead and led 27-25 after the first quarter. But the Mavs quickly took the lead early in the second quarter and held it. The seven-point lead at halftime is the largest lead of the game for the Mavs.

After missing the last four games with a groin injury, Jason Kidd got the start and has five points, five rebounds and three assists in 14 minutes. Brendan Haywood and Yi Jianlian lead the Mavs with eight points each. Haywood also has five rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki has just four points in 12 minutes while shooting 1-for-6 from the floor. Jason Terry has been solid with seven points, three rebounds, three assists and a +13.

The Mavs haven't been able to stop Sacramento's DeMarcus Cousins inside. Cousins already has a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Mavericks Vs. Kings: Jason Kidd Expected Back

The Dallas Mavericks have lost one player for the season, but will bring back another as they make a final push for the NBA Playoffs.

One day after Lamar Odom was placed on the inactive list for the rest of the season, Jason Kidd is expected back in the lineup against the Kings on Tuesday. The Mavs went 1-3 in the last four games without Kidd and are 8-7 without him in the lineup this season. Although he is averaging career-lows in points (5.9) assists (5.2) and rebounds (4.0), Kidd is still a vital part of the team as an experienced veteran.

Head coach Rick Carlisle said Kidd will be restricted in the amount of minutes he plays, but that's nothing new. Carlisle has usually held Kidd to 30 minutes or fewer when he's healthy. On Monday, Carlisle told reporters:

"We wouldn't put him out there if there was a risk," Carlisle said. "In this situation with him coming off of being out for a week and having something that was significant, we want to phase him in the right way."

NBA Power Rankings 2012: Mavericks Take a Tumble To No. 18

Going 1-3 over the last week without Jason Kidd in the last week was enough for the Dallas Mavericks to drop 10 spots to No. 18 in the NBA Power Rankings by SB Nation's Tom Ziller.

The Mavs have had one of the worst seasons by a defending champion and are battling for a playoff spot. Ziller wrote:

The Mavericks are not even close to 2007 Miami bad and no one will ever touch the 1999 Bulls, but this is probably a bottom five NBA afterglow season. Let's just hope they make the playoffs.

The Mavs currently are in seventh place, but are in a logjam for the final playoff spots in the West. Lamar Odom is out for the season after being placed on the inactive list, but Kidd should return Tuesday after missing the last four games with a strained right groin, which is good news for Mavs fans.
