Dirk Nowitzki Injury: Mavericks Forward In Starting Lineup Against Spurs

Dirk Nowitzki is in the starting lineup for the Dallas Mavericks' Sunday night matchup with the San Antonio Spurs after missing the last four games with a sore knee.

After originally being scheduled to miss only four games there was some doubt whether Nowitzki would make his return against the Spurs. Dallas has been battling injuries of late with Jason Kidd down for at least a week with a calf injury and Delonte West sitting out Friday's game with a strained hamstring. Vince Carter made his return to the lineup on Friday night after suffering a sprained foot.

Nowitzki has played in 16 games for the Mavericks this season and is averaging 17.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

Delonte West Injury: Mavericks Guard In Uniform Against Spurs

Delonte West sat out the Mavericks win over the Utah Jazz on Friday with a strained hamstring. The injury riddled Mavericks could use West on Sunday given the news that point guard Jason Kidd will miss at least a week with a calf injury suffered in Friday's win.

ESPN Dallas writer Tim MacMahon reports that West is in uniform and is going through pregame shooting and looks like he will play in Sunday's nationally televised matchup against the Spurs.

Dirk Nowitzki is a game-time decision for the Mavericks after missing four games with a sore knee.

Spurs Vs. Mavericks: Dirk Nowitzki Game-Time Decision, Jason Kidd Out

Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said during his pregame press session that Dirk Nowitzki will be a game-time decision for Sunday's game against the Spurs. It is presumed that Nowitzki will see how he feels during warm-ups before a decision is made.

Nowitzki has missed the Mavericks last four games with a sore knee. He was originally scheduled to return for Sunday's game against the Spurs but he may in fact not be fully ready to go. In his absence, Lamar Odom has seen an increase in playing time.

One player whose status is certain is point guard Jason Kidd who Carlisle said will be out until at least next weekend. Kidd suffered a calf injury in Friday's game against Utah and left the game in the first quarter. With Delonte West also banged up, Rodrigue Beaubois stepped up in the veteran point guard's absence scoring 22 points and handing out seven assists against the Jazz.

Dirk Nowitzki Injury: Mavericks Star Eyeing Sunday Return

Dirk Nowitzki has missed three games and will sit out the Mavericks game Friday night against Utah. The All-Star forward is eyeing a return to the court for Sunday's nationally televised game against the San Antonio Spurs.

Dirk Nowitzki says he's had a good week of work and is shooting to return to the Dallas Mavericks' lineup Sunday...

Nowitzki was originally scheduled to return on Sunday after missing four games with a sore knee and conditioning issues. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban then told ESPN Dallas that it was possible that Nowitzki would be out longer than the originally planned four games. Rick Carlisle was non committal on Thursday when discussing Dirk's status for Sunday's game.

(Mavs coach Rick Carlisle) says Nowitzki has made progress, though Carlisle isn't guaranteeing Nowitzki will play Sunday against San Antonio, the last of four consecutive home games.

The Mavericks are currently 11-8 on the season and in a virtual tie for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Dallas Mavericks Injury Updates: Dirk Nowitzki 'Iffy' For Sunday; Vince Carter Aims For Friday

The Dallas Mavericks are being extremely careful with their many veterans due to the lockout-induced compressed season, which is why the return dates for Vince Carter, recovering from a foot injury, and Dirk Nowitkzi, working on conditioning and strengthening his knee, are still up in the air.

Carter, who has missed the last five games with a sprained left foot, practiced on Thursday and said there's a chance he may return Friday, when the Mavericks host the Utah Jazz.

Dirk, meanwhile, has reportedly been making great progress in preparing his body for a marathon stretch of games over the next four months.

However, he wavered on his possible return date, which was initially projected to be Sunday against the San Antonio Spurs.

Dallas has gone 3-2 since Carter's injury against the LA Lakers, with youngsters Rodrigue Beaubois and Brandan Wright making good use of the extra playing time and Shawn Marion and Lamar Odom increasing their offensive production.

The Mavericks have dramatically improved their depth from last season, when they went 2-7 in Dirk's absence, which has been a life-saver for a veteran team trying to squeeze 66 games into four months.

Dirk Nowitzki Injury: Mark Cuban Says Star 'Will Be Fine'

In a Thursday interview with Fox Sports Radio, Mark Cuban discussed Dirk Nowitzki's four-game absence as well as his pursuit of a MLB franchise:

"He’ll be fine. In this season it’s just crazy with the number of games in the compressed schedule, so Jason Kidd already had a few days off. Vince Carter is getting some time off. Now it’s Dirk’s turn. We are fine. We just want to make sure he has got his legs going into the second half of the season."

While Dallas struggled to a 2-7 record without their MVP candidate last season, the addition of Lamar Odom has given them more depth on their front-line, as they are 2-1 without Dirk in the line-up.

If the initial timetable given for his absence is accurate, the 7'0 German will be back in the line-up when the Mavericks host the San Antonio Spurs, another old team dealing with injury concerns in the lockout, on Sunday.

Mark Cuban: Dirk Could Be Held Out More Than Four Games

In an interview with ESPN Dallas, Dallas Mavericks owner Marc Cuban hinted that Dirk Nowitzki may be held out for more than the four games that was initially reported, although he insisted that there was nothing structurally wrong with the star PF's knee:

"It's not about his knee. His knee wasn't feeling well, but that's a symptom of everything else," Cuban said prior to Monday's game with the Phoenix Suns, the second of four games Nowitzki is expected to miss. "So, it's not like there's some problem. Even if it was his head, we would still do the exact same thing.

"There's nothing specifically wrong. Dirk has a process to get ready. You mess with the process; he just didn't feel right," Cuban said. "It's not just Dirk, it's other guys, too. It's a first for us in dealing with a lockout."

According to Cuban, Dirk's pre-season routine was thrown out of whack by his participation in the 2011 Eurobasket competition for Germany as well as the late start of the 2011-2012 season due to the lockout.

The ten-time All-Star has looked off his game for good parts of the season, laboring on one knee while averaging 17.5 points and 5.6 rebounds on 45% shooting, his worst numbers since the 1999-2000 season.
