Cowboys Training Camp: Jason Witten Prepares To Help Set The Standard

Jason Witten is the longest tenured member on the Dallas Cowboys roster along with quarterback Tony Romo. They've seen a lot and been through a lot as the high and low times under Jerry Jones watch and the two are focused on turning things around. For Witten, its about doing things the right way. First in Oxnard, then in preseason, then the regular season.

Courtesy of Tim McMahon of ESPN Dallas, leadership change is coming from the top down. From the owner, to the quarterback to the rest of the players, its all about setting the standard.

"Hey, there's going to be a standard created. I think Tony (Romo) does a great job of, ‘This is what I want.' That's an 8-yard stop route. You can't run it at 12. That's a 10-yard out route. I can't run it at 6. Also, everybody's got to understand that and feel that urgency. I think that's what Jerry was saying earlier."

Once the standard has been set, its all about doing it the right way once the season begins.

"That urgency has to happen not just Wednesday, September 5. It's got to happen out here on Saturday, August 4. You've got to create that. There's no tolerance for not knowing how to line up. We're going to miss blocks or drop balls or those things occasionally, but we can't afford not to know what we're doing or how to do it."

Is the window closing on the Cowboys? Not if the pair of Romo and Witten have anything to say about it.
