Cowboys Notes From Jason Garrett's Presser; Conditioning And Offensive Line

As appears to be customary during the training camp days, Jason Garrett met with the media after the morning walkthrough and prior to the afternoon practice. One of the first topics that came up was that of the three Dallas Cowboys players that failed the conditioning test.

Apparently, Andre Holmes and Brodney Pool were doing a lot of long-distance running in preparation for the season. Garrett explained that isn't what helps you prepare to play football. Garrett did not specifically mention why Felix Jones failed the test, but it is possible that his work was limited due to his shoulder surgery and fear of re-injuring the joint.

The biggest news out of camp to this point is the high ankle sprain suffered from Bill Nagy in yesterday's practice. The backup C/G is awaiting MRI results. Garrett noted that the competitive nature for returning center Phil Costa comes from the Cowboys defensive line's presence whenever the huddles break.

On Ron Leary:

He's getting an opportunity... Ron did a good job in that pre-training camp last week aat Valley Ranch and we feel like he's worthy of getting some snaps... we have some guys banged up in the interor of our offensive line so that's allowing those younger guys to get more reps. The biggest thing for those guys is to go attack those reps. Often times a young player will go in there and be a little hesitant, kind of looking around, 'what does the coach want me to do?' Just go play, we'll clean up the mistakes.

On Center depth:

One of the things we're trying to do is work some of those tackles and some of those guards who haven't really snapped... we need to have a third center available... We need to have a third center available... it can be pretty disruptive to your entire practice to have the ball on the ground.
