The salary cap penalty slapped on the Cowboys on the NFL had no effect on their ability to make moves in the first few days of free agency.

Legions of Cowboys fans were up in arms when it was announced that the team would lose $10 million of cap space on the eve of free agency. Executive VP Stephen Jones probably just leaned back in his chair with a "watch this" Cheshire smile on his grill.

The Cowboys have accomplished much in the first wave of free agency; to the point that reports today state that the team is no longer considering taking action against the league over the penalties imposed.

The team has acquired it's backup QB in Kyle Orton, it's new lead corner in Brandon Carr, the important third piece to the ILB rotation in Dan Connor, and the necessary lead blocker in Lawrence Vickers. They also signed a true free safety adept at pass coverage in Brodney Pool and they added depth at the guard position in Mackenzy Bernadeau. Those are crucial moves that the team needed to make. They'll only cost the franchise around $10.5 million in 2012 salary cap space. That's an approximation, as Connor's deal specifics are unknown; the other five total $9.7m in salary cap hit.

$23.6 million dollars in real money turned into a small blip on the radar. There are rumors that Dallas still has about $10 million worth of cap space to play with (they'll have to sign their draft picks) and can still re-adjust certain contracts should they want to add additional wiggle room.
