Jason Witten breaks Cowboys career receptions record

The Cowboys tight end broke the franchise record for career receptions, an event marred by the team's loss to Atlanta on Sunday night.

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten broke the career franchise receptions record on Sunday, moving past Michael Irvin in career receptions during the Cowboys loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

With seven catches against the Falcons, Witten broke Irvin's career mark of 750 receptions with the Cowboys. The tight end now has 8,447 yards and 42 touchdowns on 752 career receptions as a Dallas Cowboy and has done so in just his tenth NFL season.

Drafted in 2003, Witten became one of the premier tight ends in the NFL in just his second season as he caught 87 balls for 980 yards and six touchdowns in 2004. Witten's production picked up significantly when Tony Romo became the Cowboys starting quarterback, with the tight end amassing more than 1,000 yards in a season three times and passing the 900-yard mark in five straight seasons since 2007.

Witten arrived at the record-setting mark a bit earlier than expected thanks a record-setting game against the Giants, catching a 18 balls for 167 yards in the Cowboys loss.
