Sammy Morris To Be Signed By The Dallas Cowboys, According To Source

Not only did the Dallas Cowboys find another heartbreaking way to lose a football game, this time in a 37-34 defeat to the New York Giants, but Jason Garrett's offense also lost their rookie workhorse tailback Demarco Murray has been lost for the season with a fractured ankle.

With Felix Jones being the only tailback relatively healthy on the roster, the Cowboys needed to make a move. Enter former New England Patriots running back Sammy Morris:

Sounds like Sammy Morris to Cowboys. Good news for Felix Jones owners. Morris can help on 3rd down, but can't handle much of a load. @PFF_MikeClay via Twitter

Morris, the former Texas Tech Red Raider, has played for the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and most recently the Patriots. At age 34, Morris has been a veteran presence in the Patriots locker room, and maybe the seasoned vet's calming perspective can help the Cowboys finish the season strong and secure a playoff spot.

DeMarco Murray Injury Update: Star RB Out For The Season

After suffering a gruesome-looking ankle injury in Sunday's 37-34 loss to the New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray is out for the rest of the season with a broken ankle.

Despite starting only seven games this season, Murray rushed for 897 yards on 5.5 yards a carry with 2 TD's, the most for any Cowboys rookie running back since Emmitt Smith.

He will be replaced in the starting line-up by former starter Felix Jones, who had a solid effort against New York last night, rushing for 106 yards on 16 carries, although he did have an extremely costly fumble at the end of the first half that gift-wrapped three points for the Giants.

But, after Jones, Dallas is extremely thin at running back, as they released Tashard Choice earlier in the season and placed rookie Philip Tanner on injured reserve.

Jones has also been extremely injury-prone throughout his four-year career, including missing four games with a high-ankle sprain this season.

The Cowboys are likely to scour the list of available RB's in the next few days to find a backup for Jones, who should receive most of the carries in Murray's absence.

2011 NFC East Standings: Giants Retake Division Lead, Playoff Spot

The Cowboys took a tremendous hit in the NFC Playoff picture on Sunday night in a 37-34 loss to the rival Giants - with both teams now tied at 7-6, New York took the tiebreaker advantage to the NFC East lead based on head-to-head match up. Now Dallas will need to take the rematch - the two teams meet again on New Year's Day - and hope the Giants stumble (the toughest remaining game on the Giants' schedule is against the Jets in two weeks).

The division has been reduced to a two-team race, as Washington was officially eliminated from playoff contention with a loss to the Patriots, and the Eagles are hanging on at the bottom of the wild card race with eight losses. Washington could help the Cowboys by beating the Giants this week - NFC losses factor into tiebreaker scenarios stronger than losses to AFC teams.

NFC East Standings

W L T PF PA
New York Giants 7 6 324 349
Dallas 7 6 317 281
Philadelphia 5 8 297 292
Washington 4 9 229 290

Giants Vs. Cowboys Final Score: Dallas Shocked At Home 37-34

Dallas led New York 34-22 with 3:30 remaining in the game but squandered the lead falling 37-34 and dropping behind the Giants in the NFC playoff race. Dan Bailey's 46 yard field goal attempt with just six seconds remaining was blocked sealing the victory for New York.

New York entered the fourth quarter leading 22-20 but would surrender fourteen straight points to the Cowboys. First, Tony Romo found Miles Austin on a six yard pass to retake the lead at 27-22. Later in the quarter, Romo found Dez Bryant all alone for a 52 yard scoring strike that made the score 32-22.

After that the Giants went to work marching 80 yards in just 2:27 seconds resulting in an Eli Manning to Jake Ballard eight yard touchdown reception. New York retook the lead on their next possession with a 58 yard drive capped off by a Brandon Jacobs one-yard run. D.J. Ware punched in the two-point conversion and the Giants led 37-34.

Dallas and Tony Romo weren't finished as they flew back down the field and got Bailey in position for the game-tying attempt with just six seconds remaining. Before Dallas could snap the ball, New York successfully called a time out just prior to the Cowboys snapping the ball. Bailey's attempt after the whistle was good but was for naught. His next attempt was blocked giving the Cowboys a very disappointing loss.

Tony Romo finished 21 of 31 for 321 yards and four touchdowns. Felix Jones stepped in for the injured DeMarco Murray and rushed for 106 yards. Laurent Robinson led all Dallas receivers with four catches for 137 yards.

Eli Manning had a huge day going 27 of 47 for 400 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Brandon Jacobs ran for 101 yards and two scores while Hakeem Nicks caught seven passes for 154 yards.

Giants Vs. Cowboys Score: Dallas Heads To The Fourth Trailing 22-20

A blown coverage in the Dallas secondary has the Cowboys trailing the New York Giants 22-20 heading into the fourth quarter of a key NFC East match up.

Dallas wasted little time extending its halftime lead marching 41 yards in its first possession of the second half resulting in a Dan Bailey 49 yard field goal to make the score 20-15. New York and Eli Manning came right back catching the Cowboys defense in a late substitution and a blown coverage resulting in a 47 yard touchdown reception for Mario Manningham

Tony Romo has thrown for 135 yards and two touchdowns but will need to engineer a fourth quarter comeback if the Cowboys want to stay in the NFC's playoff picture. Felix Jones has his first 100 yard effort of the season rushing for 102 yards on 13 carries after starter DeMarco Murray suffered a fractured right ankle in the first quarter.

Eli Manning has been under duress the whole game but has hit enough big plays to make up the difference. Manning has thrown for 257 yards and a touchdown through the first three quarters of the game.

DeMarco Murray Injury: Cowboys Running Back Has Right Ankle Fracture

Rob Phillips of dallascowboys.com reports that Cowboys' rookie running back DeMarco Murray has a right ankle fracture and a high ankle sprain.

DeMarco Murray - right ankle fracture, high ankle sprain
Dec 12 via webFavoriteRetweetReply

Philips also speculates that the Cowboys could be looking to sign a couple of running backs after tonight's game. Murray's injury is severe enough that he could be headed for injured reserve and Felix Jones is the only other running back active for Sunday's game against the New York Giants

Giants Vs. Cowboys Score: Tony Romo, Dallas Lead New York 17-15 At Halftime

There are some hard hits being passed between the Cowboys and the Giants but neither offense is running into that much difficulty in the first half. Dan Bailey's 49 yard field goal with 20 seconds in the half put the Cowboys back in front 17-15.

The Giants began the scoring in the second quarter when Brandon Jacobs capped off a 10 play, 80 yard drive with a one yard scoring run. Dallas came right back with an 80 yard drive of their own and re-took the lead with a Tony Romo to Laurent Robinson nine yard touchdown.

Dallas forced a punt on New York's next possession but Felix Jones coughed up a fumble deep in the Cowboys own territory to set Eli Manning up with good field position. The Giants were unable to punch it in however and had to settle for a 26 yard Lawrence Tynes field goal to make the score 15-14 with just 1:07 remaining in the half. Romo and company then marched 49 yards and Bailey's field goal put the Cowboys back in front at the intermission.

Romo is off to a solid start completing 10 of 14 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Felix Jones has 81 yards rushing on eight carries but lost a fumble in the first half. Laurent Robinson caught two passes for 49 yards and a touchdown in the first half.

The Giants defense has been in Eli Manning's face the entire first half. Manning completed just 9 of 19 passes for 146 yards in the first half. Brandon Jacobs has 62 yards on 13 carries while Hakeem Nicks caught four passes for 105 yards.

DeMarco Murray Injury: Cowboys Running Back Leaves Game With Leg Injury

Cowboys rookie running back DeMarco Murray was helped off the field during the first quarter of Dallas' Sunday night game against the New York Giants. A Giants defender appeared to roll up on the back of Murray's leg possibly injuring his ankle in the process. Sideline reporter Michelle Tafoya reports that Murray is getting x-rays on his right ankle and his return to the game is questionable.

If Murray can't return, it leaves the Cowboys very thin at the running back position with Felix Jones being the only other tailback active for Sunday's game. Jones replaced Murray in the lineup and promptly ripped off a 26 yard run on his first carry of the game.

Before being injured, Murray had five carries for 25 yards in the game. Coming into the game, Murray had rushed for 872 yards and two touchdowns this season. He burst onto the scene against the St Louis Rams earlier this season with a franchise-record 253 yards rushing.

Giants Vs. Cowboys Score: Tony Romo Touchdown Pass Puts Dallas In Front 7-5 After One

It was an inauspicious starts for the Dallas Cowboy's offense but they were able to get things together late and lead the New York Giants 7-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Dallas' second drive of the game began deep in their own territory and it didn't last long. On second down, quarterback Tony Romo  tried to avoid a Giants defensive lineman only to stumble into his own end zone for a safety and a 2-0 Giants lead. After the free kick, Eli Manning hooked up with Hakeem Nicks for a 64 yard gain. The Cowboys defense would hold the Giants to a field goal and a 5-0 lead.

Dallas got things rolling on their third drive with an eight play, 80 yard drive that resulted in a Tony Romo touchdown pass to John Phillips to give the Cowboys the lead at 7-5.

The Dallas defense is going to have to figure out a way to slow down Nicks who went over 100 yards in the first quarter with four catches for 105 yards.

Jason Witten Week 14 Fantasy Update: Cowboys TE Could Have Big Day Vs. Giants

As the Dallas Cowboys try to regroup themselves after a tough overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday, there's no question that Jason Garrett will be looking to get his offense back on track after it stuttered so poorly.

One way that Garrett can get things rolling is putting his quarterback in a position of comfort. For a quarterback, their safety net is usually throwing to the tight end. For the Cowboys, that'd be "Old Reliable" Jason Witten.

Per NumberFire.com, they are projecting that Witten ranks as the No. 4 tight end this week, trailing only Rob Gronkowski, Antonio Gates and Jimmy Graham.

Witten's 61 catches and 760 receiving yards both are tops on the Cowboys statistical leaderboard, and the Cowboys could use him more than ever on Sunday.

DeMarco Murray Week 14 Fantasy Projections

Dallas Cowboys rookie running back DeMarco Murray faces a tough match up in Week 14 against the New York Giants. NumberFire.com projects Murray to rush for just under 80 yards this week and to score 13.38 fantasy points in standard formats. Murray is the No. 11 running back this week in numberFire's projections and the No. 31 player overall.

Since bursting onto the scene with a 253 yard franchise-record performance in Week 7, Murray has been a staple in the Cowboys backfield amassing 20 carries in four of the next six games. His worst performance of the season since being named the starter came last week in the loss to Arizona where he finished with just 38 yards rushing on 12 carries.

If there are any complaints for Murray's fantasy owners it is the running back's lack of touchdowns that is preventing him from moving up the rankings list among running backs. Entering Week 14, Murray has 159 carries for 872 yards but only two touchdowns.

Tony Romo Week 14 Fantasy Projections

Tony Romo has been a solid start at the quarterback position for the last several weeks and is ranked in the top 10 by numberFire.com for Week 14. Romo is rated as the No. 6 best quarterback start this week and the No. 8 overall. Numberfire projects Romo to score 15.76 points this week in standard scoring formats.

Before last week's loss to the Cardinals, romo had thrown for at least two touchdowns in four straight games. Last week he totaled 299 yards passing but only found the end zone one time. During his last five games, Romo has thrown 11 touchdowns and just two interceptions.

Romo has completed more touchdown passes against today's opponent the New York Giants than any other team in the NFL. In those matchups, Romo has completed nearly 64 percent of his passes and has 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Recent Betting Trends For Giants @ Cowboys

Straight Up and Against The Spread (ATS)

NY GIants: 3-3 on the road in 2011, both straight up and ATS; 1-2 in last five games overall. Dallas: 5-1 at home straight up in '11, but only 2-4 ATS; 3-0(SU), 1-2(ATS) in last five overall. Dallas is 2-4 as a home favorite against the spread.

The Giants are 2-6 in last 8 ATS, with double digit failures against Seattle, Philly and New Orleans and victories over Patriots and Green Bay. Cowboys are 3-5 in last 8 ATS, with double digit failures only on the road against Philly and Arizona and victories over Buffalo, St. Louis and New England.

In last five head-to-head meetings, Dallas is 3-2 ATS, 2-3 Straight up against Giants. Dallas is 2-3 both ATS and straight up in last five home games in rivalry.

Scoring

On the road, Giants are allowing 10.5 points in the first half (1.0 and 9.5 per quarter) and 17.3 points in the second half (7.3 and 10.0), for a 27.8 ppg given up average. The Cowboys at home seem to be a slightly better first half team, scoring 15 ppg in the first half (5.7 and 9.3)  and 13.1 in the second (4.8 and 8.3) for a total of 28.1 at Cowboys stadium.

At home, Cowboys are allowing 6.3 points in the first half (2.0 and 4.3  per quarter) and 9.7 points in the second half (5.2 and 4.5), for a 16.0 ppg allowed average. The Giants on the road seem to be a much better second half team, scoring 7.8 ppg in the first half (4.0 and 3.8)  and 15.8 in the second (4.0 and 11.8) for a total of 23.6 off the plane.

Overall

Current Line (Las Vegas Hilton) Dallas -4.5 O/U 50.5

The current line is exactly the difference between Dallas avg points scored and NY Giants avg points scored on the road. Looking simplistically at all the trends, it would appear that Dallas will take a small lead into halftime, stretch it out by early in the fourth quarter, than have to hang on as the Giants stage a late rally. The rally will bring NY within a score, but the Cowboys should still prevail.

My (Meaningless) Prediction

Cowboys don't cover, but win outright. Cowboys 27 Giants 24.

Giants Injury Report, Week 14: Osi Umenyiora Out, New York Thin At Linebacker For Cowboys

The reeling New York Giants desperately need a win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14 to stay in the thick of the NFC East race. They will have to earn that win with a banged-up linebacking corps.

Mark Herzlich and Spencer Paysinger are both out for New York against the Cowboys, and Michael Boley is probable, but did not participate in practice on Friday.

And Osi Umenyiora remains out with an ankle injury that has plagued him in 2011.

Fortunately for the Giants, their offense is remarkably healthy: running back Ahmad Bradshaw, who has been recovering from a foot injury, is probable, and so are Brandon Jacobs and Mario Manningham.

Here's the rest of the Giants injury report for Week 14:

OUT: C David Baas (neck), LB Mark Herzlich (ankle), LB Spencer Paysinger (hamstring), DE Osi Umenyiora (ankle).

DOUBTFUL: S Kenny Phillips (knee).

QUESTIONABLE: none.

PROBABLE: LB Michael Boley (hamstring), RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot), RB Brandon Jacobs (hamstring), CB Prince Amukamara (back), WR Mario Manningham (knee), DE Dave Tollefson (knee).

Cowboys Injury Report, Week 14: DeMarcus Ware, Laurent Robinson Both Questionable

The Dallas Cowboys face a major NFC East test against the New York Giants in Week 14, and they may be facing that test without one of the their best defensive players and one of Tony Romo's more reliable receivers.

DeMarcus Ware and Laurent Robinson were limited in practice on Friday with injuries, and the Cowboys could be without both players against New York, as they are listed as questionable on the Cowboys' injury report.

On the bright side for the Cowboys, Miles Austin may be healthy enough to make it back into the lineup since sustaining a hamstring injury in Week 9 against Seattle. If Austin and Robinson can't go, Dallas' wide receiving corps may be very thin behind Dez Bryant.

Here's the rest of the Cowboys injury report for Week 14:

OUT: DT Josh Brent (knee), QB Jon Kitna (back).

DOUBTFUL: TE Martellus Bennett (ribs), S Danny McCray (ankle).

QUESTIONABLE: WR Miles Austin (hamstring), FB Tony Fiammetta (illness), G Kyle Kosier (foot), WR Laurent Robinson (shoulder), LB DeMarcus Ware (neck).

PROBABLE: LB Sean Lee (wrist), P Mat McBriar (left foot).

Signing Gerald Sensabaugh A Good Move

The Cowboys locked up veteran safety Gerald Sensabaugh for the next five years today. to the tune of $8 million guaranteed. The full deal would give the player $22.5 million over it's life, as the seventh-year pro has spent the last two-plus seasons on a string of three one-year deals.

Sensabaugh, 28, was often overlooked when Cowboys fans discussed the team signing a safety in the offseason, but as top-tier and middle-road players signed lucrative deals elsewhere Sensabaugh became more intriguing. Looking at his performance this year, he would probably be one of the more sought after safeties in free agency next year, and the Cowboys had no interest in getting into a bidding war for his services.

The former Jacksonville Jaguar now has the security most NFL players look for. His impact for the defense this year was probably most evident when the Cowboys played Detroit earlier in the season. Gerald collected his first interception of the season on Matthew Stafford. Dallas was able to shut down Calvin Johnson for much of the first half, until Sensabaugh went out of the game with concussion-like symptoms. We all remember Megatron's second half performance that included a jump ball catch in between three defenders, none of which was Sensabaugh.

After that game, I was able to catch up with Gerald in an exclusive Blogging The Boys interview to discuss his impact on the defense, as well as his annual one-year contracts and a quest for more stability.

Jump to the 2:22 mark for our discussion of his contract situation, at the time.

Pro Football Focus ranks Sensabuagh as the league's tenth-best safety so far this year, under their cumulative game grades. He has 2 interceptions and two forced fumbles, and has the flexibity to play coverage and run support from both safety positions.

DeMarcus Ware Says Justin Tuck 'Wishes He Was A Cowboy'

With a pivotal divisional showdown between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants coming Sunday, players from the two bitter NFC East rivals have been trading shots all week.

Justin Tuck, the Giants Pro Bowl DE, started it off by saying how much he hates the Cowboys in general and the Death Star in Arlington in particular.

DeMarcus Ware, in turn, wasted no time defending the Cowboys:

"He says that because maybe he wants to play here," Ware told reporters Wednesday. "Everybody wants to play for the Cowboys. If I wasn’t playing for the Cowboys I would call it that, too, because I want to play for them."

"I hate anytime we play them," Ware said. "It’s just not the Giants, because guess what, the team is trying to come in here and take your manhood. So it don’t matter who you’re playing."

Players from around the NFL have long voiced frustration about the amount of publicity and national attention "America's Team" gets, and it's one of the main reasons why the Cowboys rivalries with big-market teams in Washington, Philadelphia and New York City are so heated.

Dallas Cowboys Individual Player Power Rankings: Week 14

Welcome to my completely subjective power rankings of individual Dallas Cowboys players. Here I'll attempt to slot the Top 25 players based on several factors: overall career performance, season performance, recent performance and probably most importantly, overall worth to the team.

Players that have been injured recently are knocked down a few pegs (see, Miles Austin), but their obvious impact also plays a factor in how low they drop (see, Miles Austin).

Again, these are completely subjective, but to balance that out, I'll include their Pro Football Focus cumulative grades. PFF breaks down film of each play for every player in the NFL and assigns it a grade ranking from -2.0 to +2.0. A players individual grade is the accumulation of every snap he's taken for the 2011 season.

Therefore players such as DE Sean Lissemore, who has received the least amount of snaps of offensive/defensive players on the list are making a high impact in limited opportunities. Lissy hasn't even accrued enough snaps (25% of team's total snaps) to make the regular listing of 3-4 defensive ends for PFF. If he did, he'd rank 7th in the league based on what he's done in only 188 snaps.

Without further ado, here are the Week 14 IPPR's.

PositionPlayerPFF Cumulative
1 Tony Romo +6.3
2 DeMarcus Ware +21.9
3 Jason Witten +8.4
4 Jay Ratliff +14.1
5 Sean Lee +7.5
6 Dez Bryant +9.2
7 Tyron Smith +14.5
8 DeMarco Murray +8.8
9 Miles Austin +1.0
10 Anthony Spencer +7.1
11 Laurent Robinson +3.8
12 Sean Lissemore +11.9
13 Gerlad Sensabaugh +3.8
14 Mat McBriar +12.3
15 Mike Jenkins -0.6
16 Jason Hatcher +2.4
17 Dan Bailey +11.4
18 Felix Jones +1.3
19 Montrae Holland +5.2
20 Kenyon Coleman +0.2
21 Terence Newman -3.3
22 Tony Fiammetta -1.2
23 Orlando Scandrick -0.7

Dallas Cowboys Injury Report, Week 14: Laurent Robinson Misses Practice With Shoulder Injury

Laurent Robinson didn't practice Wednesday because of a slightly separated right shoulder suffered in the first half of the 19-13 overtime loss versus the Arizona Cardinals. In four games since Miles Austin went down, Robinson has scored five touchdowns for Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys offense. Cowboys Vs. Giants Odds: Dallas Favored By Four At Home

As the Cowboys go into the biggest game of their season coming off a devastating OT loss to Arizona, they still have some believers in Las Vegas. They are favored by -4 points against the New York Giants.

New York, after leading the NFC East for most of the season, has been in a tail-spin, dropping their last four games as their schedule toughened up -- at San Francisco, Philadelphia, at New Orleans, Green Bay.

However, they showed a lot of fight against the unbeaten Packers last week, pushing them to a 38-35 loss and losing on a last-minute Aaron Rodgers drive.

The Giants defense, rated 29th in the NFL against the pass and 23rd against the run, should offer up plenty opportunities for QB Tony Romo and RB DeMarco Murray, although they still have a collection of excellent pass-rushers that could pose problems for the Cowboys young offensive line.

Dallas is expecting WR Miles Austin back after their Pro Bowl WR has missed the last six games with a hamstring injury.

The Cowboys might need his production immediately, as their pass defense has shown cracks recently, giving up big days in the air to Rex Grossman, Matt Moore and Kevin Kolb.

They'll have an even bigger challenge on Sunday against Eli Manning and New York's explosive group of WR's, as the Giants passing offense is rated 4th in the NFL.

With both defenses looking suspect, the over/under for Sunday night's game is 49.5.
