Four teams from the region are projected to play in bowl games this season, with Texas squaring off against Georgia in the Cotton Bowl the marque matchup of the bunch.

The final bowl projections are in from SB Nation's Jason Kirk, and four teams from the region are slated for bowl games.

The most high-profile matchup in the group is Texas taking on Georgia in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 4. Both teams suffered losses in conference championship games on Saturday, Texas falling to Kansas State and Georgia losing a heartbreaker to Alabama

The TCU Horned Frogs are slated to take on the UCLA Bruins, another conference championship game loser, in the Holiday Bowl, played Dec. 27 in San Diego.

The projections see the Baylor Bears headed to Houston to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Dec. 28 in the Meineke Bowl. The Bears ended their season on a three-game winning streak, including a stunning 54-24 upset of then-No. 1 Kansas State on Nov. 17.

SMU gets to travel somewhere a bit more exotic, taking on Fresno State in the Hawaii Bowl, played on Christmas Eve in Honolulu.

Bowl game announcements will officially be made on Sunday evening.

The signing of Derek Fisher by the Dallas Mavericks means the demotion of Darren Collison as the team's starting point guard. Collison is understandably frustrated with the situation.

For the second time in eight months, point guard Darren Collison is losing his starting role. Unlike last season, when an injury cost Collison the Pacers' starting PG job to George Hill, the former UCLA star is being demoted by the Dallas Mavericks to allow newly-acquired veteran Derek Fisher to assume the starting point guard job.

As might be expected, Collison is not happy with the demotion, and would prefer to play rather than learn from Fisher while on the pine. Via Jeff Kaplan at Hang Time Blog:

"I feel like at this point in my career, if there's anything I need to learn it's just go out there on the court and just learn from my mistakes," Collison said. "That's what a lot of young guards do, you go out there, you learn from your mistakes. As far as Derek Fisher, I think I can learn from him. He's a great leader on and off the court. I'm looking forward to playing with him."

Fisher has not played since Game 5 of last year's NBA Finals. The 17-year veteran was unsigned until Friday when the Mavericks picked him up. In his first game of the year on Saturday night, the 38-year-old point scored two points on 1-of-8 shooting, dished out three assists, and turned the ball over three times in 24 minutes as the Dallas starting point guard.

For the season, Collison is averaging 12.9 points, 6.3 assists and 2.5 turnovers.

The SMU Mustangs upset the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Saturday, 35-27, meaning SMU is bowl-eligible for a school-record fourth year in a row.

The SMU Mustangs (6-6, 5-3 C-USA) handed the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (9-3, 7-1) their first conference loss of the season on Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams. The Mustangs became bowl-eligible in the process, for a school-record fourth consecutive year.

The Mustangs raced out to a 35-6 lead in the matchup against the Golden Hurricane, before needing a last-second goal-line stand to preserve the victory. The SMU ground game was the difference on Saturday, with Garrett Gilbert rushing for 111 yards on just 12 carries, and Zach Line chipping in 81 yards and three touchdowns on the ground for the Mustangs.

SMU's 35-27 win at Gerald Ford Stadium on Saturday means a second-place finish in Conference USA's West division for the Mustangs, with a 5-3 mark. Tulsa had already wrapped up the division title prior to the contest, and will face the UCF Knights next Saturday in the Conference USA championship game.

The Baylor Bears (5-5, 2-5 Big 12) stunned the college football world on Saturday night, knocking off the newly minted No. 1 team in the land Kansas State, 52-24. The national championship hopes of the Wildcats (10-1, 7-1) are now likely ruined, and Baylor's impressive performance may have also cost Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein a shot at the Heisman.

Needless to say, the folks over at SB Nation's Baylor blog Our Daily Bears are ecstatic over the win:

The impact of this game will be felt across the country for years. The National Championship race is completely different. The Heisman race is completely different. The entire scope of college football in the 2012 season is different. Because the 4-5 Baylor Bears shocked the world. Because the much-maligned Baylor defense shook itself off, planted its flag, and absolutely shut down one of the best quarterbacks and offenses in the country. The Heisman was lost tonight because Baylor made it so. I've never seen a Baylor team play like that, and they deserve tremendous credit for their performance. Gentlemen, you were outstanding.

Ecstatic might not even be a strong enough word. Euphoric might also apply. As the author of the post, Mark C. Moore, says at the top of his post, Saturday night's win was possibly the biggest victory in the history of the program.

Baylor had not beaten an opponent ranked as high since 1957, when the Bears defeated No. 2 Tennessee, 13-7, in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. Baylor also tied No. 1 Texas during the 1941 season.

The Sun Belt Conference gets primetime exposure on Tuesday night when the North Texas Mean Green host the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns.

The Sun Belt Conference takes center stage in primetime on Tuesday when the North Texas Mean Green (2-4, 1-1) host the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns (4-1, 2-0) on ESPN2 at 9:00 p.m. ET.

The Mean Green have struggled early in the season, but three of the team's four losses have come to LSU, Kansas State and Houston. An upset of the Ragin' Cajuns on Tuesday night, however, puts North Texas squarely in the mix for the Sun Belt title.

Louisiana-Lafayette's only loss of the year came at the hands of Oklahoma State, a 65-24 thrashing on Sept. 15. Despite losing starting quarterback Blaine Gautier, the Ragin' Cajuns have scored 41.5 points per game in their victories.

North Texas will need a strong game from junior quarterback Derek Thompson in order to win on Tuesday night. Thompson has completed more than 50 percent of his passes in just three of his six games this season, though he did show potential against Kansas State, throwing for 208 yards and a touchdown on 25 of 28 passing.

Louisiana-Lafayette has won the past five matchups between the two teams, including a 30-10 victory in last season's contest.

Despite scoring 63 points, the Baylor Bears lost the offensive shootout of the season on Saturday to West Virginia by allowing the Mountaineers to put 70 points on the board.

Despite scoring 63 points, the Baylor Bears lost the offensive shootout of the season on Saturday to West Virginia by allowing the Mountaineers to put 70 points on the board. As you might imagine after a game where the final score is 70-63, the folks over at SB Nation's Baylor blog Our Daily Bears have some issues with the Bears defense:

I'm going to say some things here about Baylor's defense that are not positive. I want to make two things clear before I do: 1) I'm not taking anything away from WVU QB Geno Smith in doing so because he was simply transcendent today, and 2) I don't think we need to fire Phil Bennett. Yes, we're paying him for a lot more than we're getting right now. Yes, everyone expects for the defense to perform much, much better than it did today. No, we can't get where we want to be with that kind of performance. All that taken as fact, Phil Bennett is a good defensive coach. Despite the scorn I heaped upon him in the heat of the moment on twitter, it's not his fault that our players don't tackle when they have the chance, and it's not his fault they make terrible decisions like leaving Tavon Austin wide open down the sideline. Our biggest problem at this point is clearly the defensive line, where we're playing a redshirt freshman in an alignment we've never used before because we lost our starter before the season.

Baylor has a bye next Saturday, before welcoming the TCU Horned Frogs to Waco on Oct. 13. A kickoff time for that game has yet to be announced.
