The Oklahoma State Cowboys rolled past the Purdue Boilermakers on Tuesday in the 2013 Heart of Dallas Bowl.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys took advantage of a plus-five turnover margin on Tuesday to blow out the Purdue Boilermakers, 58-14, in the 2013 Heart of Dallas Bowl.

Scoring at least twice in each quarter, the Cowboys scored the first 45 points in the game before the Boilermakers scored a touchdown with 18 seconds left in the third quarter. OSU put up 524 yards to Purdue's 366, but the Boilermakers' two interceptions thrown by quarterback Robert Marve and three fumbles kept them from threatening.

After punting on the first drive of the game, Purdue (6-7) had the next four drives end with an interception, a missed field goal, a fumble and a loss on downs.

The troubles didn't end in the second half, when OSU had a 28-0 lead. Less than a minute into the third quarter, a fumble by Purdue receiver O.J. Ross was recovered at the Boilermakers' 37-yard line and returned the distance by Cowboy safety Daytawion Lowe for a touchdown.

Oklahoma State (8-5) used a balanced attack throughout. Quarterback Clint Chelf threw the ball just 22 times, and running back Joseph Randle had 17 carries for 66 yards. Randle got help from fellow backs Desmond Roland (nine carries for 51 yards) and Jeremy Smith (six carries for 41 yards).

Box Score Hero: Oklahoma State quarterback Clint Chelf completed 17-of-22 passes for 197 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

But Did They Cover? The Cowboys more than covered the spread that opened up at 18 points in their favor.

The Dallas Mavericks lost to the Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs over the weekend.

The Dallas Mavericks may have gotten Dirk Nowitzki back on the court, but the German big man hasn't made much of a difference as he gets back into the swing of things. The Mavericks lost to the Denver Nuggets on Friday and the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday as Nowitzki averaged 6.5 points and hit just 5-of-19 shots from the field.

Dallas' losing streak has reached six games in a row following the defeat at the hands of the Spurs, and around the NBA, the weekend was filled with quirky outcomes involving notable streaks.

The Washington Wizards ended their own eight-game losing streak on Friday with a 105-97 win against the Orlando Magic, and the Charlotte Bobcats' 98-95 loss on Saturday to the New Orleans Hornets, who were helped by the return of guard Eric Gordon, was Charlotte's 18th straight loss.

Meanwhile, the 11-19 Kings got a buzzer-beating shot from James Johnson to drop the New York Knicks, 106-105, on Friday before Sacramento handed the Boston Celtics their third consecutive loss with a 118-96 win on Sunday.

As far as winning streaks are concerned, the Los Angeles Clippers continue as the hottest team in the league. They had a come-from-behind, 116-114 win against the Utah Jazz on Friday before winning a Sunday rematch with a final score of 107-96 on Sunday.

The Dallas Mavericks met the Minnesota Timberwolves on the night of point guard Ricky Rubio's return.

A night after Toronto whipped them by 21 points, the Dallas Mavericks fell,114-106, to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday in the season debut of Minnesota point guard Ricky Rubio.

Despite Derek Fisher and O.J. Mayo scoring 20 each, the Mavs couldn't stop the Timberwolves on offense. The spark of Rubio's nine assists -- including one between-the-legs pass -- and eight points put Minnesota over the top and dropped Dallas to 11-13 on the season.

Also on Saturday night, a battle between two of the NBA's most surprising teams ended with the Golden State Warriors defeating the Atlanta Hawks 115-93. The Warriors improved to 16-8 overall and 10-5 on the road with the win in Atlanta.

The New York Knicks won by a point to survive Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving's 41 points, the San Antonio Spurs easily handled the Boston Celtics and the Chicago Bulls beat the Brooklyn Nets 83-82 on Saturday as well.

On Sunday, the Los Angeles Lakers got their second win in a row with a 111-98 victory in Philadelphia against the 76ers, and rookie of the year candidate Damian Lillard hit a three-pointer to push the Portland Trail Blazers past the New Orleans Hornets.

Losing eight of their last 12 games, the Dallas Mavericks have come down to earth after a solid start to the year without Dirk Nowitzki.

The Dallas Mavericks are reeling, and with Dirk Nowitzki's return still on the backburner there's been a return of reserved expectations following a surprising 4-1 start to the year. SB Nation's Seth Rosenthal dropped the Mavs from 19th to 20th in this week's NBA power rankings after Dallas lost two of three games.

If the Mavericks (8-9) hope that the signing of Derek Fisher will help solidify the team, well, there's not a whole bunch of optimism they'll completely turn it around.

The signing of Derek Fisher (and subsequent burial of Darren Collison, Dominique Jones and Rodrigue Beaubois) seems indicative of an identity crisis: What's the point? What is there to gain? Then again, the Mavs may still look in the mirror (a huge mirror) and see a solid enough team that eschewing the cultivation of youth for an outside shot at a few extra wins -- again, with the shaky assumption being that the presence of Derek Fisher moves the needle toward more wins, if at all -- makes sense.

Dallas fell this past week to the Philadelphia 76ers and the Chicago Bulls before recovering at home to beat the Detroit Pistons on Saturday.

In the two losses, the Mavs struggled to shoot the ball, especially from three-point range. They hit just 26 percent of their attempts against the Sixers and 22 percent against the Bulls.

The wins and losses have also been predicated on O.J. Mayo's success in the scoring department. While he has filled up the box score, his scoring output in the losses (11 points and four points against Philadelphia and Chicago) is nothing compared to his 27 points scored against the Pistons in Dallas' win.

A game between two familiar foes, the 2012 Cotton Bowl pitting the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas A&M Aggies has plenty of storylines.

The Texas A&M Aggies and Oklahoma Sooners meet Jan. 4, 2013, in the Cotton Bowl designated for an SEC team and a Big 12 team, but these two squads have more than a solid foundation of history after the Aggies left the Big 12 following the 2011 season.

In what could be the most interesting of the non-BCS bowl games, the Sooners (10-2) face quarterback Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M, which surprised in its first year of SEC play with a 10-2 record under new coach Kevin Sumlin. Texas A&M's only slipups this season include losses to Florida, which is currently ranked third, and now-No. 8 LSU, while their win against No. 2 Alabama nearly did the Crimson Tide in as far as national championship aspirations were concerned.

From Aggies blog Good Bull Hunting:

OU has always been an interesting game. The two programs share an aggressive disdain for the University of Texas. In those emotions, there is shared solace. But rest assured, there is still plenty of hate to make this one of the very best bowl games of the year.

Reggie McNeal as a freshman. Jason White. Adrian Peterson. Mike Sherman at Kyle. And yes, 77-0. We're already hearing about some of the darkest moments in Texas A&M football history.

That references the 2003 beatdown the Sooners put on the Aggies. And while Texas A&M has turned it around this year thanks to Johnny Football, Oklahoma and Bob Stoops have a thorn to pick out of their side. The Sooners dropped out of BCS bowl consideration with the somewhat surprising news of Northern Illinois sneaking into the Sugar Bowl.

Now they face yet another tough task, one that rivals the Aggies' difficult SEC schedule, writes Sooners blog Crimson and Cream Machine:

[...] the Sooners will be making the short trip to south to Jerry World where they will face former conference foe, Texas A&M. Just one of a flurry of potential story lines for the game, Oklahoma could be facing a Heisman Trophy winner and at a minimum will be one of few, if any, teams in the history of college football to play three Heisman favorites in the same season.

The other two candidates can take some credit for the only two losses on Oklahoma's season. The Sooners fell 24-19 to the Kansas State Wildcats and Heisman candidate Collin Klein, then lost 30-13 to linebacker Manti Te'o and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle Doug Free struggled against a Philadelphia Eagles defensive line that hasn't been all that spectacular of late.

The Dallas Cowboys held off a desperate Philadelphia Eagles team 38-33 on Sunday night, but concerns along the offensive line linger as Jason Garrett's team heads to Cincinnati this coming weekend.

At the heart of the problem was right tackle Doug Free, who struggled mightily in protecting Dallas quarterback Tony Romo. Free gave up the Eagles' only sack of the game to Philadelphia defensive end Brandon Graham in the first half and also was called for two penalties, though one was negated by a defensive infraction.

From Dallas Cowboys blog Blogging the Boys:

Break is what a lot of fans probably did while watching Doug Free's blocking attempts on the Eagles Wide 9. He was routinely beaten; relinquishing sacks, holds, embarrassment, frustration and curse words. Head coach Jason Garrett says that he demands accountability, but folks were hard pressed to understand why Jermey Parnell didn't get a shot at right tackle with Free playing so brutally.

Garrett defended his tackle after the game, telling reporters that he didn't think about benching Free. The head coach and offensive line coach Bill Callahan told Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas/Forth Worth that Free played better in the second half, especially in terms of his pass protection.

The sixth-year veteran from Northern Illinois has committed an NFL-leading 13 penalties through 12 games this year.

The Dallas Mavericks have put up the points, but it's their defense that caused them to fall in this week's NBA power rankings.

Rick Carlisle's Dallas Mavericks have surprisingly been able to put the ball in the bucket without the injured Dirk Nowitzki, but they find themselves with a 7-7 record because the defense isn't getting it done. Because of that, the Mavericks fell from No. 15 to No. 19 in SB Nation's Week 5 NBA power rankings compiled by Seth Rosenthal.

According to Rosenthal:

They don't win games these days unless they can crack 100 points. At least they're doing that with some frequency, including their explosive win at home against the Knicks on Wednesday. O.J. Mayo hasn't really lost steam yet and Vince Carter has been quietly, sickeningly picking up his productivity as well.

The Los Angeles Lakers' new offense tore up the Dallas defense in a 115-89 loss for the Mavericks on Saturday as Mayo struggled from the field and scored only 13 points.

Dallas had a solid victory against a very good New York Knicks team this week, but also fell in overtime to the Golden State Warriors. Mayo, an offseason free agent acquisition, scored 27 points in each of those games for the Mavericks, who are scoring the sixth-most points per game in the NBA. At the same time, Carlisle's team is 27th in points allowed per game and 21st in defensive rating.

Texas assistant general manager Thad Levine denied that there is a limit on a contract offer for slugger Josh Hamilton.

Texas Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine told ESPN baseball analyst Jim Bowden there is no truth to the rumors of the team limiting any new contract offer to slugger Josh Hamilton.

Previously, USA Today wrote that Hamilton might be limited to a three-year deal coming from the Rangers. Bowden said that the 31-year-old could find a taker for five years and around $115 million despite the potential risk in the form of slumps or off-the-field issues.

Fellow ESPN reporter Buster Olney also reports that the All-Star could command a good amount of cash from the Philadelphia Phillies, but the length of a wanted deal was also an issue there.

Hamilton was one of several players to turn down $13.3 million qualifying offers on Friday. That was a pay cut from his salary of $13.75 million in 2012.

Last season, Hamilton hit 43 home runs and had 128 RBI while hitting .285 for the Rangers.
