2012 U.S. Open Tennis Results: Roger Federer Ousted, Andy Roddick Retires

In a shocking result to cap Wednesday's play at the U.S. Open, No. 6 Tomas Berdych upset top-seed Roger Federer, 7-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, to survive and advance. The player from the Czech Republic came out firing and held on to his early two-sets-to-none lead.

Berdych's victory marks the first time in 11 years the men's No. 1 seed has not advanced to the semifinals, and is also Federer's first ever night loss at the U.S. Open.

The other big news of the day was Andy Roddick falling to Juan Martin del Potro in the American's final match, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, 6-4. The 30-year-old Roddick finished his career after hitting 16 more unforced errors than the Argentinian. Del Potro advances to the quarterfinals to face No. 2 Novak Djokovic, who dispatched of Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 6-1, 3-1 as Wawrinka retired in the third set.

Also on the men's side, three-seeded Andy Murray beat Marin Cilic in four sets in a quarterfinal match. After dropping the first set, 3-6, the Olympic gold medalist won the next three by 7-6, 6-2, 6-0. Murray will face the upset-minded Berdych.

On the women's side, favorites Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams both won their quarterfinal matches. The three-seeded Sharapova defeated Marion Bartoli, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and is set to face top-seed Victoria Azarenka in the semis. Williams made quick work of Ana Ivanovic, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the semis where she will face No. 10 Sara Errani of Italy.
