Sam Houston State Vs. Baylor 2012: Final Score And Game Recap

The Baylor Bears beat Sam Houston State, 48-23, avoiding a major upset at home against the visiting Bearkats.

Baylor trailed 20-10 at the half, thanks to an offense that struggled at times in the second quarter and a defense that seemed unable to stop the Sam Houston offense. The Bearkats scored 17 points in the second quarter, surprising the Bears and threatening to walk away with a major upset.

The Bears would come alive after halftime, however, with a quick Nick Florence touchdown pass to Jordan Najvar just 50 seconds into the second half and a touchdown pass to Terrance Williams on the next drive. Sam Houston State would respond with two field goals to start the fourth quarter to pull to within 24-23, yet Baylor would pull away with 24 unanswered points to close out the game.

Florence was 24-of-41 for 312 yards and three touchdowns, yet also threw two interceptions, which included a pick in the final seconds of the first half. Jarred Salubi would lead the Bears with 83 yards rushing on 17 carries, with the team racking up 232 yards on 39 carries for the game.

Baylor would outgain Sam Houston State 544-403 for the game, with the defense forcing four turnovers.

The Bears will take on Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 21, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT and coverage on ESPN.

Baylor Vs. Sam Houston State: Bears Trail At Halftime, 20-10

The Baylor Bears trail the Sam Houston State Bearkats at halftime, 20-10, in what might not be so much of a cakewalk for Baylor after all.

Baylor traded field goals with SHSU in the first quarter before things picked up in the second. The Bearkats took a surprising lead in the second quarter on Miguel Antonio's second field goal of the game. Baylor responded with a five-play, 77-yard touchdown drive capped by a 22-yard touchdown pass to from Nick Florence to Terrence Williams.

It was all SHSU from there. Quarterback Brian Bell rushed for a touchdown to regain the lead for the Kats. Then Bell connected with running back Timothy Flanders for a 26-yard touchdown toss to give SHSU a two-possession advantage at halftime.

Sam Houston State Vs. Baylor 2012: Game Time, TV Schedule, Spread And More

Baylor steps down into the Football Championship Subdivision this week, when they play Sam Houston State at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco. Both squads won their season opener on Sept. 8.

A win stretches Baylor's winning streak to seven, dating back to Nov. 5 of the 2011 season. The Bears beat Southern Methodist 59-24 at home this past Saturday.

Sam Houston State, of the Southland Conference, defeated Incarnate Word at home in Huntsville 54-7 to open up their 2012 campaign. The Bearkats finished second in the FCS last year, losing to North Dakota State in the championship game 17-6.

At halftime, Baylor will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its new stadium, scheduled to open in 2014. The game will be broadcast at 7 p.m. ET on Fox College Sports. There is no line available for this game.

Baylor Vs. Sam Houston State: Bearkats Are 2011 FCS Runner Ups

The Baylor Bears may have steamed through the SMU Mustangs in their first game of the season, but they still can't afford to look ahead in their schedule past Sam Houston State, who they play on Saturday.

Not only were the Bearkats the runners-up in the FCS last season, but they had a pretty solid year en route to that title. They won every game up until the title game, with blowout scores like 66-0 on their record. They took a win from New Mexico as well, needing overtime to prevail 48-45 over the Lobos.

North Dakota State, who won the FCS last season, have already picked up a win over an FBS team this year. They took a very convincing 22-7 win from the Colorado State Rams last weekend, so Baylor may want to watch out for the upset bid from the team that came in second in the level below.

Baylor Hopes To Avoid ULM Upset

Louisana-Monroe has shown that no game is a "gimme," as the small school has made a habit of upsetting big-time programs, with a shocking win over Alabama in 2007 and a even bigger surprise over then-No. 8 Arkansas last week in overtime. Baylor coach Art Briles is making sure his team knows that, with an expected cupcake matchup with Sam Houston State next up for the Bears.

After that game? A Friday-night affair with the upset kids at ULM themselves. Briles isn't taking either team for granted.

"Both of them are tough games, and we play them in a six-day span," Briles told The Oklahoman. "We have a lot of respect for what Sam Houston State did last year. And they've upgraded their personnel. We're just working on our end, trying to be the best we can be."
