TCU won its first-ever Big 12 game on Saturday, defeating the Kansas Jayhawks 20-6. The game wasn't the prettiest victory that TCU has had in the last several seasons, and fans of the No. 16 Horned Frogs saw both good and bad in the performance. First, the good:
TCU moved the ball at will, gobbling the Jayhawks up on the ground and in the air and they stymied the Kansas rushing game. Two of Casey's fumbles were flukey- being hit while throwing and a snap that flew through his legs, so there's no serious cause for alarm in the long term. TCU clamped down on the TCU passing game in the second half, and though Crist did have some success downfield he completed less than 50% of his passes and we'll take that every day. The defense also did a good job in bending, but not breaking- keeping Kansas out of the end zone all game, and we won on the road.
Now for the bad:
The third fumble was all on Casey (Pachall), though the defense didn't break, it did bend more than we like to see- the defense got gashed by the Kansas running game early (Weis may have outsmarted himself by going away from it in the second half, or Patterson may have just given him looks that he didn't like the looks of running into- I'll check the tape) and we missed a short field goal. Worst of all, Waymon James looked like he may have hurt his knee at the end of the game, so we'll be left worrying about that for the next few days at least.
The Frogs will be hosting the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday, Sept. 22 in their next outing. The Cavaliers come into the game at 2-1, having lost to Georgia Tech on Saturday, 56-20.

Led by quarterback Casey Pachall, wide receiver Brandon Carter and a dominant defense, the 16th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs defeated the Kansas Jayhawks, 20-6, on Saturday in Lawrence, Kansas for their first win as a member of the Big 12 conference.
Pachall and Carter connected for two touchdowns as the Jayhawks led 3-0 in the first quarter before the Horned Frogs outscored them 20-3 the rest of the way.
Pachall had a monster game with 335 yards on 24 of 30 passing and the two touchdowns to Carter. Carter snagged eight receptions for 141 yards as he and his quarterback dwarfed an otherwise balanced attack that also featured 99 yards on 12 carries by Waymon James.
After a strong start to the game, Kansas quarterback Dayne Crist lost his way against the Horned Frogs defense, finishing 19 of 39 passing for 303 yards and an interception. The Jayhawks were also unable to take advantage of four turnovers, three of which came inside their own 20-yard line.
TCU's next game is against Virginia on Sept. 22.

The TCU leads 7-3 after one quarter of play against the Kansas Jayhawks in the Horned Frogs' first-ever Big-12 conference game on Saturday.
TCU struggled offensively out of the gate, turning the ball over on consecutive possessions to start the game. Fortunately for the Horned Frogs, Kansas was only able to get a field goal after the two turnovers.
Casey Pachall fumbled the ball to Kansas on TCU's second possession, but Jayhawk quarterback Dayne Crist gave the ball back on an interception just two plays later. The Horned Frogs were able to take advantage by going on a 4-play, 52-yard touchdown drive.
Brandon Carter connected with Pachall on an eight-yard touchdown catch for TCU's only first quarter score.
Kansas is drove deep into TCU territory as the second quarter began, but they missed a field goal and the score has stayed at 7-3.

In their first ever game as members of the Big 12, the No. 16 TCU Horned Frogs are heavy favorites to win their debut, when they head to Lawrence to take on the Kansas Jayhawks.
With a 56-0 win over Grambling State in their opener, TCU has yet to see a true test, and most would argue that the Jayhawks will not be the ones to provide that. Charlie Weis' squad certainly ought to provide a tougher challenge than Grambling State.
In the first season for the Jayhawks with Charlie Weis at the helm, Kansas got out to a decent start with a 31-17 win over South Dakota State, but a 25-24 loss to Rice in the subsequent week spoiled the fun. Now Kansas enters as three-score underdogs for Saturday's game.
Game time/date: 11:00 a.m. CT, Saturday, Sept. 15
Location: Memorial Stadium, Lawrence, KS
TV: FX
Odds: TCU opened as 22-point favorites and are currently 21-point favorites.
Matchup History: TCU leads 16-8-4

Dave Campo, former defensive coordinator and head coach for the Dallas Cowboys, has spent this season adjusting to working in the Big 12. The Kansas Jayhawks signed him up as their defensive coordinator during the offseason to help boost a defensive unit that needed the help and gave up 393 points last season.
Campo has said that the Big 12 is different from the NFL because of the wide-spread use of the spread offense around the conference:
"When you talk about the SEC or the PAC 12, they are almost more NFL-type leagues from the standpoint that they are all like what Texas is doing," Campo said, explaining how the Big 12 is more fast-paced with a spread offense.
Expectations are low for the Jayhawks this season, so Campo won't be called into question in a bad situation. He'll try and keep building the defense for a better future.

The Big 12 is a dramatic step up in competition for the TCU Horned Frogs, but they might not be able to tell in their first conference game, a road game in Lawrence on Saturday.
Kansas, in their first year under Charlie Weis, is coming off a home loss to Rice. And while I enjoy piling on Weis as much as the next blogger, that's really not all that surprising considering the Jayhawks went 5-19 in the last two years under Turner Gill.
As a result, TCU is a whopping 21-point favorite over Kansas on Saturday, with an over/under of 59.5.
The Frogs are coming off an overwhelming 56-0 home win over Grambling, which tells us precisely nothing about how good they'll be in 2012.
From the looks of it, they may not be tested much more by the Jayhawks.
