The United States and China are still embroiled in a bitter dogfight in the medal count standings at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The Unites States has reclaimed the lead in total medals as events get underway on Thursday, although they still trail in gold medals.

The United States has 81 total medals and 34 gold medals, while China has 77 total medals, but a whopping 36 gold medals. After Britain claimed the third spot in the medal count early in the week, Russia took it back on Wednesday, as they now have 52 medals against the host country's 48.

Here is what the medal count leaderboard looked like heading into Thursday's events.

1. United States - 81 (34, 22, 25)
2. China - 77 (36, 22, 19)
3. Russia - 52 (11, 19, 22)
4. Great Britain - 48 (22, 13, 13)
5. Germany - 32 (7, 15, 10)
