2012 London Olympics: U.S. Still Trails China In The Medal Battle

The United States grabbed four medals thanks to track and field on Tuesday, but still trail the Chinese in the overall medal count as well as the gold. But beware! The British are coming! Not really, but relative to their prior efforts, this year's games have been kind to its hosts. Y'all know the drill at this point. Let's take an 8-bit look:

Historically host countries take a bump up against their average of medals won, and the usual home field advantage has paid off again, as the host Brits are in third place with 48 medals (22 gold) aided by Saturday's six-gold effort.

There's still a chance for the U.S. to catch China in the home stretch, especially with the conclusion of many track and field events yet to come, but the window is beginning to close. It's possible that these Olympic Games could see a repeat of the finish in Beijing in 2008, when the Chinese boasted the most gold, but the U.S. the most medals.
