London Olympics 2012: Marquise Goodwin Fails To Medal In Long Jump

Texas Longhorns wide receiver and track star Marquise Goodwin was expected to win a medal in the long jump in the Olympics. However, Goodwin did not have his best performance and finished in a disappointing 10th place. After the preliminary rounds of competition, Goodwin was tied for first place with Brazil's Mauro Vinicius da Silvaa as both had a jump of 8.11 meters.

Goodwin needed only one jump to advance, and that mark of 8.11 meters was still short of his 8.33 meter jump at the Olympic trials. In the finals Goodwin's first jump did not count and his final two jumps were 7.8 meters and 7.76 meters. Those jumps had Goodwin fall all the way down to a 10th place finish.

Even had Goodwin jumped the same distance as the prelims he would have still failed to medal since third place was 8.12 meters. However, had he jumped the same distance at the Olympic trials of 8.33 meters he would have defeated Great Britain's Greg Rutherford who jumped 8.31 meters and would have won the gold medal.
