No. 3 Andy Murray defeated No. 2 Novak Djokovic to win the 2012 U.S. Open Tennis Championship on Monday evening, 7-6(10), 7-5, 2-6, 2-6, 6-3. Murray, the runner-up at Wimbledon earlier in 2012, won his first grand slam by beating the defending champion Djokovic.
The match lasted four hours and 54 minutes.
Murray took the first set 7-6(10) in a fairly even contest to start the match. Djokovic managed two aces to just one for Murray, while winning just 37 percent of second-serve points. Djokovic would also find himself falling into the trap that would plague him going into the second set, with 19 unforced errors. The set would break the record, with 22 points in the tie breaker.
The second set was controlled by Murray most of the way, with Djokovic once again hitting 19 unforced errors and struggling yet again (22 percent) on second-serve points. Murray was content to let Djokovic's mistakes undo him rather than force the play himself.
The third set, however, is when it all started to turn around. Djokovic used two of five break points won and a suddenly potent second serve to put Murray on his heels and sieze the momentum, winning easily, 6-2.
Murray attempted to regain control in the fourth set, but Djokovic easily dominated with three aces, 83 percent of first serves in and just nine unforced errors in the set. Murray seemed to be out of control at times in his attempt to stop the building momentum by Djokovic, and the match would go to a fifth set.
The fifth set was all about Murray, however, who finally found a way to close out matches after earning a reputation as a player without a "knockout shot." Murray would take a 3-0 lead, breaking Djokovic in the third game and taking control of the set while the Serbian would eventually start to have troubles with cramping in his right leg.

Serena Williams rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the third set to win her fourth U.S. Open title, upsetting No. 1-seed Victoria Azarenka in Sunday's final round, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. The U.S. Open title is Williams' first since 2008. She also won in 1998 and 2002.
Azarenka was looking for her second Grand Slam win. She won the Australian Open in January with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Maria Sharapova in the final.
Earlier in the day, men's No. 2 Novak Djokovic overcame a loss in the first set to knock off No. 4 David Ferrer, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Djokovic advances to Monday's men's singles final where he will face third-seeded Andy Murray. Murray advanced to the final with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (7) win over Tomas Berdych on Saturday. He won the gold medal in the Olympic men's singles competition in August and will play for his first-ever Grand Slam win.

Top-seeded Victoria Azarenka defeated No. 3 Maria Sharapova, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the U.S. Open Championships. Azarenka did get off to a slow start with Sharapova dominating the first set, but Azarenka was able to storm back and win the match fairly easily.
The third set was a heated battle filled with multiple fantastic rallies, but Azarenka was able to get the win by breaking Sharapova on the final point.
Looking at just the stats, Sharapova played better with eight aces while Azarenka did not have any, and Sharapova had 43 winners while Azarenka had only 18. The key difference was Sharapova's 40 unforced errors compared to only 18 for Azarenka.
This is Azarenka's first U.S. Open final, and if she is able to win, it will be her second career Grand Slam title to go along with her 2012 French Open victory.
Azarenka will meet the winner of the other semifinal match between Serena Williams and Sara Errani.

In a shocking result to cap Wednesday's play at the U.S. Open, No. 6 Tomas Berdych upset top-seed Roger Federer, 7-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, to survive and advance. The player from the Czech Republic came out firing and held on to his early two-sets-to-none lead.
Berdych's victory marks the first time in 11 years the men's No. 1 seed has not advanced to the semifinals, and is also Federer's first ever night loss at the U.S. Open.

Andy Roddick lost to Juan Martin Del Potro in four sets at the 2012 U.S. Open Tennis Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The Austin, Texas resident has said that this year's Open will be the final tennis tournament of his career.
Roddick fought back to take the ninth game of the fourth set, receiving a thundering ovation from the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, N.Y. However, Del Potro took the first two points of the following game, and put Roddick away for good.
Roddick, who was emotional in greeting the crowd following the match, will retire as a one-time Grand Slam champion, as he defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero in the finals of the 2003 U.S. Open. He reached four other Grand Slam finals, but lost to Roger Federer each time.
Del Potro will move on to the quarterfinals to face No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic.

Rain has delayed the 2012 U.S. Open several times throughout the past few days, meaning a few postponed matches will need to be re-started on Wednesday including the marquee match between Andy Roddick and Juan Martin Del Potro. Del Potro had the serve as the two were tied 6-6 in their first set when the postponement hit. Seven games in all were postponed, along with the Maria Sharapova vs. Marion Bartoli match.
The quarterfinals beginning on Wednesday will bring more marquee matches to the table, most notably the two taking place at 7 p.m. at Arthur Ashe Stadium -- No. 1 Roger Federer takes on Tomas Berdych following Serena Williams facing off against Ana Ivanovic.
A full schedule for the U.S Open can be found at the tournament's official website. Full television coverage of the tournament can be seen from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the Tennis Channel and then on ESPN2 starting at 1 p.m.

No. 11 Marion Bartoli of France is up 4-0 in the first set of her quarterfinal match against Russia's Maria Sharapova, the women's No. 3 seed, during a rain delay at the 2012 U.S. Open. Bartoli is serving 15-30 in the fifth game against Sharapova.
Rain has come and gone throughout the day, and the timing of this particular delay may prove to be as helpful to Sharapova as it was on Sunday, when rain interrupted her match with No. 9 Nadia Petrova.
Petrova led 2-0 in the third set, having won eight straight points. Sharapova fought back after the delay to win the match, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, putting the four-time Grand Slam champion into the quarterfinals.
On the men's side, No. 4 David Ferrer was returning serve up 4-3 in the third set of his match with No. 13 Richard Gasquet when play was suspended. Ferrer won the first two sets, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2).
The rain doesn't look to be going away, but after already experiencing multiple delays during the tournament, U.S. Open officials will likely look to get the players back out there for as long as they can when the rain stops.

Moving forward, Federer will go head to head with No. 6 seed Tomas Berdych, who defeated Spain's Nicolas Almagro in sets of 7-6 (4), 6-4 and 6-1 on Monday. Berdych, a 26-year-old from the Czech Republic, used 17 aces to dispatch Almagro, the No. 11 seed in the tournament. Almagro also struggled with five double-faults on the afternoon.

Maria Sharapova, the third seed in the world, needed three sets to get past No. 19 Nadia Petrova on Sunday evening during a rain-delayed match at Arthur Ashe Stadium in round three of the 2012 U.S. Open Tennis Championship. Sharapova will face Marion Bartoli in the Women's Quarterfinals after the French player upset No. 5 Petra Kvitova earlier in the day.
In other women's action, Laura Robson of Great Britain saw her surprising charge through the tournament come to an end as she was unable to overcome numerous unforced errors against defending champion Samantha Stosur.
USA's Andy Roddick will delay his retirement for just one more round after the No. 20 seed dispatched Italy's Fabio Fognini, 7-5, 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-4 on Sunday after struggling midway through the match. Roddick will face No. 7 Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina in the Round of 16, who defeated Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 7-5, 7-6(9).

Andy Roddick stayed alive at the 2012 U.S. Open on Sunday afternoon, defeating Italian Fabio Fognini, 7-5, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, in a third-round match at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing. It didn't come easy for Roddick, as Fognini made him work to earn the first two sets. Roddick put things together in the fourth and final set, making only three unforced errors, getting up a break, and holding serve to take the match. It wasn't as dominant as the win over Bernard Tomic, but with his career coming to a close, Roddick looks to be playing his best tennis of the summer.
Fognini battled back in the third set, however, holding serve and finally breaking through on his third set point to win it, 6-4. The demonstrative Italian made it a challenge for Roddick in each set, battling the American in front of the partisan crowd.
Roddick now moves on to the Round of 16, where he'll face Juan Martin Del Potro, the 2009 winner of the U.S. Open. It will be a highly anticipated showdown, likely scheduled for Tuesday night on Ashe.

The top women's seed and defending men's champion are in action Sunday, but the focus will again be on Andy Roddick. The Austin native and 2003 U.S. Open champion faces Fabio Fognini at 1:30 ET Sunday, looking to extend his legendary career for two more days. Roddick, who announced earlier this week that he would retire after the tournament, rolled through a straight-sets win over Bernard Tomic Friday. Fognini defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the third round. Roddick has made the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in six of the last eight years, and looks to extend that streak. The match is set to begin at approximately 1:00 CT
Elsewhere in the men's bracket, defending champion and second-seeded Novak Djokovic faces No. 31 Julien Benneteau at 10:00 a.m. CT. John Isner, the highest-ranked American man in the draw, will play No. 19 Philipp Kohlschreiber in Sunday's late match at approximately 8 p.m. CT. No. 4 seed David Ferrer plays Australian Lleyton Hewitt at 10 a.m. CT. No. 7 Juan Martin del Potro, No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic, and No. 13 Richard Gasquet are also in action.
Third-seeded Maria Sharapova plays in Sunday night's primetime match against No. 19 Nadia Petrova. The 2006 U.S. Open champion, who has not advanced past the fourth round since that win, has had little trouble advancing through the first three rounds, dropping just seven games. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET.
In other women's action, top seed Victoria Azarenka faces Anna Tatishvili at 3:30 p.m. Fan favorite Laura Robson is back in action against No. 7 Samantha Stosur in the late afternoon match at Louis Armstrong Stadium Court; the match is scheduled for approximately 3 p.m. ET. Andy Roddick, who announced he will retire from tennis after the U.S. Open, advanced in the 2012 U.S. Open. Roddick defeated Australian Bernard Tomic in straight sets by a score of 6-3, 6-4 and 6-0. Roddick was dominant in his second -ound match, but leading into the match, he was not sure how he would play since he announced his retirement on Thursday:
''I had no idea what was going to happen out there,'' Roddick said. ''I've played a lot of matches and that was a different kind of nerves than I've had before, so that was surprising for me.''
[...]
"I look forward to it,'' the 20th-seeded Roddick said during an on-court interview with one of his former coaches, Brad Gilbert, "and I'm going to try to stick around a little longer.''
Perhaps Roddick will be more relaxed and make a deep U.S. Open run since he knows this is his last go around. Up next for Roddick is Fabio Fognini.

Andy Roddick announced at a Thursday press conference that he will retire from professional tennis following this year's U.S. Open. The 30-year old Roddick was arguably the best American male tennis player for a decade. He won the 2003 U.S. Open and became the world's No. 1 ranked player soon after. He also played in three Wimbledon finals and four Australian Open semifinals, and won 32 ATP tour events over the course of his career.
Roddick told reporters he knew his time had come and gone:
"Whatever my faults were, I've always felt like I've never done anything halfway. This is probably the first time in my career that I can sit here and say, I'm not sure I can put everything into it physically and emotionally. I don't know if I want to disrespect the game by coasting home."
Roddick was born in Omaha, Neb., but spent his childhood in Austin, Texas, where he currently lives, and Boca Raton, Fla.
Roddick, seeded No. 20 this year, faces Bernard Tomic on Arthur Ashe Stadium Court at 6:00 CT Friday. Television coverage will be on ESPN2.

Kim Clijsters fell in the second round of the 2012 U.S. Open, losing to Great Britain's Laura Robson in straight sets, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5), putting an end to her storied career.
Clijsters announced prior to the U.S. Open that she'd retire after the conclusion of it, though few expected her exit to come so soon. Clijsters had not lost at the U.S. Open since she lost in the finals in 2003, winning the tournament in 2005, 2009 and 2010. In the other years, she did not participate in the tournament.
Robson, meanwhile, advanced to the third round and will face China's Na Li.
Clijsters, though, is the story, as she ends her career with four Grand Slam victories -- the three U.S. Open titles and the 2011 Australian Open. Though she never won the French Open, Clijsters advanced to the finals twice, in 2001 and 2003.

Many of the first matches of the U.S. Open are close to completion, but a torrential downpour has kept many of the matches currently being played under suspension. Only four matches have actually come to completion so far in New York, all of them being Women's Singles matches. The biggest result from those was Lucie Hradecka beating No. 27 ranked Anabel Medina Garrigues by a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Currently, play has been suspended for the other 11 matches that are currently going on, and are unlikely to start unless the rain begins to let up.
For the more big name matches in the first day of play, it's about the time to start watching the tournament assuming the rain lets off some time soon. Specifically, No. 1 overall Roger Federer's match against American Donald Young will be in the second round of matches, as will No. 3 overall Andy Murray's match against Russian Alex Bogomolov Jr..
