The Mark Cuban memory tour continues, as the Mavericks owner has been hitting the interview circuit on local radio over the last week.
One of the most interesting nuggets he shared was how close the team came to acquiring Kobe Bryant in 2007, when the Lakers superstar was demanding a trade to a championship contender:
"When I was doing Dancing with the Stars, I was taking breaks because I was talking to Kobe's agent because Kobe wanted to get traded," Cuban said. "Literally, between Dancing with the Stars practices I had thought we traded for Kobe Bryant. I even talked to their owner and thought we were going to have done deal, and [Lakers GM] Mitch Kupchak changed [Kobe's] mind and brought him back."
At that time, a likely deal would have revolved around Josh Howard and Devin Harris, which would have been a laughably low return for the Lakers.
A lot has happened in the NBA over the last five years, which is probably why Cuban brought the story up in the first place. The Mavericks may no longer be a title contender, but who knows what the future holds? After all, the team does have the "flexibility" to make a major move.
