Texas Recruiting 2014: Quarterback Jerrod Heard Commits To Longhorns, Becomes 5th Member Of Class

The Texas Longhorns kept things rolling with another commitment in their class of 2014 on Tuesday, as dual-threat quarterback Jerrod Heard became the fifth member of head coach Mack Brown's burgeoning group of future Longhorns according to the The Dallas Morning News:

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Heard held offers from LSU, Baylor, Arizona and Arizona State in addition to the Longhorns, and according to SB Nation's outstanding Texas blog Burnt Orange Nation, is a pretty big catch for a program that tends to reel in big-time quarterbacks with regularity:

At this point, he's the consensus top pick for the best quarterback in the state, and makes the sixth consecutive class in which Texas has landed their top prospect, going back to Garrett Gilbert in 2009. Much like 2013 commit Tyrone Swoopes, the attention paid to Heard at a Texas summer camp was the clincher in speculation that the Guyer product was the top signal-caller on the board for the 'Horns.

The 2014 class might seem like a long time away, but there's no denying how much of an elite talent Heard is heading into just his junior season in high school. Rated the No. 53 overall player in the class right now by 247Sports.com, Heard could very well end up as a blue chip prospect by most scouting services once he's officially evaluated across the board.

The newest addition to a class that already included standout wide receiver Lorenzo Joe and Aldine Eisenhower running back Donald Catalon, Heard figures to be a very intriguing player for Mack Brown from the moment he steps on campus in 2014.
