Olympic Games 2012: USA, China Lead Medal Count After Monday

It could have been a much bigger day for the Americans on Monday at the London Olympics, but it was successful overall since they managed to tie China for the lead in the overall medal count with 17. China still by far has the most gold medals, with nine compared to the USA's five.

Disappointment came for the U.S. when Ryan Lochte, favorite to win gold in the men's 200-meter freestyle, was placed fourth in the race. The winner was Yannick Agnel, the young French who has been very impressive in these Olympics so far.

Take a look at the top five in the medal count right here:

China, 17 (9 gold, 5 silver, 3 bronze)
United States, 17 (5, 7, 5)
Japan, 11 (1, 4, 6)
Italy, 8 (2, 4, 2)
France, 7 (3, 1, 3)

It's also worth noting the only team beyond that top five with three gold medals is North Korea; Great Britain moved into a five-way tie for ninth with its third medal.
