After a French Open title a few months ago, Maria Sharapova appeared to be back. But her 2012 Wimbledon hopes were derailed in the fourth round on Monday.
The top-seeded Sharapova was defeated by No. 15 seed Sabine Lisicki 6-4, 6-3.
"It's just unbelievable," Lisicki said. "For the third time I've beaten the French Open champion here. I'm just so happy. I've lost the three previous meetings against her. Now I just played well and beat her for the first time."
Elsewhere in the women's bracket, No. 6 seed Serena Williams earned a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 win over Yaroslava Shvedova.
On the men's side, top-seeded Novak Djokovic had no problem in his fourth-round match, while No. 3 seed Roger Federer had some issues.
Djokovic earned an easy 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 win over Viktor Troicki. Federer dealt with a back injury, but was able to secure his 33rd straight Grand Slam quarterfinals appearance with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win over Xavier Malisse.
"I feel way better than a few hours ago," Federer said after the match. "Honestly, I'm not too worried. I've had bad backs over the years. I just have to keep an eye on it now. ... I hope I'll be 100 percent on Wednesday."
