2012 British Open: Ernie Els Wins His Second British Open As Adam Scott Collapses

Ernie Els was able to survive a hellacious final round to win his second British Open crown of his career. He survived the final 18 holes with a score of 2-under and overall score of 7-under for the tournament. Of course, he wasn't able to do it on his own. Nope, he needed the collapse of Adam Scott to get him that second Claret jug.

Adam Scott's 75 on the final day was gruesome to watch, as his +5 over in the final round opened the door for Els to hoist that Claret jug. The final round also chewed up and spit out many of the PGA's biggest stars on Sunday. Tiger Woods shot a +3, Brandt Snedeker shot a +4 and Graeme McDowell shot a +5 on Sunday, all losing their chance to win the third major title of the year.

Here is how the money breaks down for the top of the leaderboard:

1. Ernie Els: $1,413,569

2. Adam Scott: $808,069

T3. Brandt Snedeker: $520,583 (€423,172)

T3. Tiger Woods: $520,583

T5. Luke Donald: $326,376 (€265,272)

T5. Graeme McDowell: $326,376

T7. Nicholas Colsaerts: $239,830 (€195,796)

T7. Thomas Aiken: $239,830

2012 British Open: Hunter Mahan Two-Over Par In Round Four

The final round of the 2012 British Open is underway at Royal Lytham & St. Annes golf course in Lancashire, England and local product Hunter Mahan is still experiencing struggles.

Mahan is currently two-over par through the first 10 holes of the day on Sunday and is currently one-over for the tournament.

The British golf course has given Mahan troubles since the opening round on Thursday where he shot a 70 and followed that up with a 71 in Friday's second round and another 70 after the third round on Saturday.

Mahan is currently tied for 30th and has no realistic shot of winning the tournament. He can olny hope to finish his last eight holes strongly and end the tournament on a high note.

2012 British Open Leaderboard Update: Adam Scott Retakes Lead After Shooting A 68 In Third Round

Australian Adam Scott took back the lead at the 2012 British Open Championship after shooting a 2-under round of 68. Scott over took the lead from Brandt Snedeker who struggled in Saturday's round by shooting a 3-over round of 73 which included six bogies and three birdies.

2012 British Open Leaderboard: Brandt Snedeker Has The Lead

Adam Scott made history on Thursday with a score of 64 at Royal Lytham and St. Anne's, setting a new course record. It now is tied.

Brandt Snedeker has a piece of the mark, after having a wonderful round and also shooting a 64. Snedeker has the outright lead in the 2012 British Open with a score of 10-under heading into the weekend.

Scott is in second trailing by just one shot while Tiger Woods is in third, only four strokes back at 6-under.

Kuchar made quick work of the course with a 67 to move into a tie for fourth at 4-under par with Dufner and others. Dufner climbed 33 spots after polishing off his second day with a 66.

As for players who didn't play so well today, Rory McIlroy had a rough day to say the least. McIlroy shot a 75 and all but ended his hopes of winning his first major this year, sitting at 2-over for the week. The up-and-comer is currently tied for 52nd.

British Open Leaderboard: Brandt Snedeker Leading Second Round, Bob Estes And Hunter Mahan Tied At 1-Over

The golf world is going to quickly learn the name Brandt Snedeker. The Nashville native is currently 6-under through 12 holes in the second round of the British Open to put his overall score at 10-under. Five birdies in a span of seven holes accounts for his rapid ascension up the leaderboard.

First round leader Adam Scott is set to tee off at 8:43 a.m. ET. Other notables set to tee off later today include Tiger Woods, 9:43 a.m. ET and Bubba Watson, 9:21 a.m. ET.

Golfers with ties to the Dallas area have not had the best tournament so far. Bob Estes finished his second round with a 2-over 72, putting him at 1-over for the tournament. Hunter Mahan is also 1-over for the tournament after shooting a 71 on second round. The projected cut line is currently at 2-over, but that is likely to change given the results of the day.

2012 British Open Leaderboard Update: Hunter Mahan, Y.E. Struggle In First Round

The first round of action at Royal Lytham & St. Annes for the 2012 British Open has become the Adam Scott show thus far. Scott is six-under in the first round and currently sits atop the leaderboard with several notables within striking range. Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and Bubba Watson are just a few in the top 10 of a very recognizable group of golfers in the hunt. That's good news for ratings.

As for local golfers, the story hasn't been so great for Hunter Mahan or Todd Hamilton, who are tied at 91st place overall with a two-over score on the day. Y.E. Yang is four-over and sits tied at 118th place, while Justin Leonard is even worst at five-over tied for 128th place. The only ray of hope for local golfers with ties to the British Open this year is Bob Estes, who is in 15th place (alongside 19 others) at one-under on the day.

2012 British Open: Thick Grass, Weather Could Cause Problems

England isn't exactly known for its favorable weather, but some abnormal weather could cause some problems for golfers at this weekend's British Open.

The grass at Royal Lytham & St. Annes has become so thick and deep that players could be taking stroke penalties because of lost balls. From the Associated Press (via The Augusta Chronicle):

Because of a wet spring the native grass covering the dunes and hillocks is so thick and deep that any ball going that far off line could be lost forever.

The British Open does not send half its full field to start on the 10th tee, like some other tournaments. For now, the forecast for the week seems welcoming enough. But it could always change.

The latest forecast calls for rain today, ending sometime Thursday morning, followed by something called a "dry spell" that could last into the weekend, accompanied by gusts anywhere from 15 mph to 25 mph, more or less.
