Venus Williams was the first notable upset to occur at the 2012 Wimbledon tournament, which opened with first round competition Monday. Russian Elena Vesnina defeated Venus Williams in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. The loss marked another early elimination for Williams, who was knocked out of the 2012 French Open in the second round.
Vesnina closed out the match with an ace and she showed all-around dominance in the match. Williams has dealt with injuries that caused her to pull out of several tournaments in 2011 and she's fighting an autoimmune disease now.
The recent skid has some speculating on Williams' retirement, which she debunked when talking with the media following the match.
Maria Sharapova is still the favorite to win the tournament, though Venus' sister Serena is still around and playing on Court 2 as well on Monday.
