MLB All-Star Game 2012: National League Cruises In 8-0 Win, Takes Home-Field Advantage

The National League beat up the American League MVP and cruised to an 8-0 win in the 2012 MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday in Kansas City.

It is the third straight year the NL has won, and as a result, the Rangers will have to start on the road if they make their third straight World Series. They have begun on the road in each of the last two seasons. It was the largest margin of victory for the NL in All-Star Game history.

Tigers starter Justin Verlander allowed five runs in the first inning, including a three-RBI triple from Giants infielder Pablo Sandoval. All eight NL runs came over two innings. Rangers starter Matt Harrison allowed three two-out runs in the fourth inning, including a two-run homer from Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera.

Cabrera went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored and was awarded the game's MVP.

As for the other Rangers players, Josh Hamilton and Adrian Beltre went 0-for-2, and Mike Napoli went 1-for-2 in the start. Off the bench, Ian Kinsler went 0-for-2 and Elvis Andrus went 0-for-1 while playing third base. Out of the bullpen, Joe Nathan threw a perfect second inning, but Yu Darvish did not make an appearance. Here is SI.com's box score.

In the end, 41 position players and 20 pitchers total played in the game.

MLB All-Star Game 2012: Matt Harrison Allows 3 Runs In Fourth Inning

Big innings have killed the American League in the 2012 All-Star Game.

Justin Verlander allowed five runs in the first inning, while Matt Harrison allowed three in the fourth and the AL trails 8-0 through four innings.

Things started just fine for Harrison, as Pablo Sandoval and Dan Uggla flew out to center for two quick outs. But Rafael Furcal hit a triple and Matt Holliday singled to right to bring him home. That was followed by a two-run homer to left field by Melky Cabrera, extending the lead to 8-0.

An update on the Rangers batters: Josh Hamilton is 0-for-2, Adrian Beltre is 0-for-1 and Mike Napoli is 0-for-1.

MLB All-Star Game 2012: Joe Nathan Pitches Perfect Second Inning For American League

Most proably didn't expect Joe Nathan to be the first Ranger to make an impact at the 2012 All-Star Game in Kansas City.

Nathan faced three batters in the second inning, getting Carlos Gonzalez to ground out first base, Melky Cabrera to ground out to second and Ryan Braun to fly out to right field after Jose Bautista made a diving catch.

As for the Rangers batters, three are in the starting lineup. Josh Hamilton flew out to left field in the first inning and Adrian Beltre popped out to shortstop in the second inning. Mike Napoli is hitting eighth for the American League and will lead off the third inning.

The National League leads 5-0 after a five-run first inning off reigning AL MVP Justin Verlander.

MLB All-Star Game 2012: Joe Nathan Feels This Year's Midsummer Classic Is Special

Joe Nathan is no stranger to the Midsummer Classic. The Texas Rangers reliever has been there before with other teams, but he feels like there is something special about Tuesday night's 2012 MLB All-Star Game.

T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com brings us these quotes from Nathan on the big event:

"This one definitely means the most to me," Nathan said, "All my All-Star Games have special memories, but this one for sure.

"I didn't even think about making the All-Star team," Nathan said. "I was just fighting to put my stuff back together. That was the biggest question for others and myself, just to prove that I could still do it and if I could get back to this level. A lot of people didn't expect it, but being here is a symbol that I did."

Nathan has proved a lot during his comeback from Tommy John surgery and his resurgent year for the Rangers. Perhaps he'll get another chance to shine in the late innings -- the American League All-Stars are managed by Rangers skipper Ron Washington, after all.

2012 Home Run Derby: Prince Fielder Wins With Record 12 In Final

Prince Fielder made quite the splash on Monday.

The Tigers first baseman won the 2012 Home Run Derby in Kansas City with a record 12 home runs in the final, including a few in the center field fountain. Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista hit the most home runs in the first round, but only managed seven in the final.

Bautista (11), Mark Trumbo (7), Carlos Beltran (7) and Fielder (5) advanced out of the first round. But the highlight of the round was Yankees second baseman and American League captain Robinson Cano, who selected the AL roster. Kansas City fans were unhappy that Royals designated hitter Billy Butler was left off the roster, and they displayed that displeasure with boos during his introduction and first round. A fanbase that hasn't had much to cheer about this season went wild as Cano went homerless.

In the second round, Fielder hit 11 home runs for a total of 16. Bautista hit two and Trumbo hit six in the second round, tying with a total of 13. As a tiebreaker, the pair had a five-swing swing-off. Trumbo hit one over five swings, and Bautista hit two to advance to the final.

The longest home run of the night came from Fielder, who hit a 476-foot blast in the second round and in the final. This was Fielder's second derby win, as he won in 2009 as a member of the Brewers. He becomes the second player to win multiple derbies, joining Ken Griffey Jr, who won three in the 1990s.

2012 MLB All-Star Game: American And National League Starting Pitchers Announced

Tuesday night's 2012 MLB All-Star Game should generate plenty of excitement and on Monday, the managers from the American League and National League announced who their starting pitchers will be.

On the AL side, Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington elected to start Detroit Tigers ace, Justin Verlander. Said Verlander on Monday to MLB.com:

"What an honor it is to start my first All-Star Game," Verlander said at an Arrowhead Stadium news conference on Monday. "I've been to a few in the past and some I haven't had the opportunity to pitch like last year and some I've pitched out of the bullpen. But this is something different, and I'm going to relish every moment and hopefully play a part in helping the American league win."

For the NL, St. Louis Cardinals skipper Tony La Russa elected to start San Francisco Giants hurler Matt Cain over New York Mets knuckleballer, R.A. Dickey. Cain threw the 22nd perfect game in Major League Baseball history last month and the first ever in Giants history. La Russa explained his decision to go with Cain over Dickey this way:

"I know Dickey's going to play," La Russa said. "I'm very aware of the first half he's had. The one edge that I thought made sense, we've got Buster [Posey] catching and Matt is equally legitimate as far as getting the honor. And then we're just going to play the game. I can't bet you Dickey will come out in the second or fourth, I just know he's going to pitch in the first half of the game."

MLB Futures Game 2012: Rangers Prospects Perform Well

The Texas Rangers had a pair of their top prospects take part in the 2012 MLB Futures All-Star Game with short stop Jurickson Profar who played for the World Team, and third baseman Mike Olt who played for the United States. Both players are part of the Rangers Double-A affiliate and each earned a start in Sunday's All-Star Game.

Profar got the World team off to an early lead hitting a solo home run off of Jake Odorizzi which gave them an early 1-0 lead, and for the game he ended up going 2-for-3 from the plate.

As for Olt he started the game at third base and then made a switch to play first base, and at the plate he went a modest 1-for-5, with a RBI double and scored a run.

MLB Futures Game 2012: Jurickson Profar Homers To Give World Team 1-0 Lead

Jurickson Profar is one of the top prospects in all of baseball and he wasted little time showing off some of his skills when he homered off of Kansas City's Jake Odorizzi in the first inning.

Profar is playing shortstop for the World Team and is just 19 years old and playing at the Double-A level. He was the Rangers 2011 Minor League Player of the Year as well as the South Atlantic League MVP while playing at Class-A Hickory.

Profar comes into the game hitting .292 for Double-A Frisco with 47 runs scored and six triples. He had a 29-game hitting streak earlier this season. He is currently rated as the top prospect in the Rangers minor league system. Profar is playing in his second straight Futures game having tripled in last year's game.

2012 MLB All-Star Game: Yu Darvish Wins Final Vote

The fans have voted and their voices have been heard. Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish will join seven of his teammates and his manager, Ron Washington, as he claims the final spot on the American League roster for the 2012 All-Star Game which will be played in Kansas City on Tuesday, July 10th.

It was the first Final Vote victory for Texas in which according to Major League Baseball, online voting records were smashed. The Rangers will now be represented by Josh Hamilton, Joe Nathan, Matt Harrison, Mike Napoli, Ian Kinsler, Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre.

Darvish has taken Major League Baseball by storm as he's already amassed 10 wins in his first season in the big leagues and joins Hideki Matsui and Hideki Okajima as Japanese winners on the AL side of MLB.com's Final Vote.

2012 MLB All-Star Game: Yu Darvish Leads Final Vote

You can help Yu.

With just one day remaining in MLB's Final Vote contest, which pits five players in each league against each other for the last spot on the All-Star Game roster, Yu Darvish leads all American League nominees.

Darvish is facing some stiff competition from some pretty good hurlers. Former Cy Young winner Jake Peavy is in second place behind Darvish in the contest, followed by Jason Hammel, Jonathan Broxton and Ernesto Frieri.

Though Darvish's numbers aren't as good as Peavy's, he's still leading the vote with less than 24 hours to go. If Darvish hangs onto his lead, he will be the eighth Ranger to be named to the All-Star team, a figure that represents 32% of Texas' active roster.

Over in the National League, Chipper Jones had been leading the voting. Jones, though, was named as an injury replacement to Matt Kemp, and thus, taken off of the ballot. Currently, look away, Rangers fans, if the name still stings, David Freese leads in the National League, ahead of Bryce Harper, Michael Bourn and Aaron Hill.

You can vote for Darvish over at MLB.com.

2012 Futures Game: Mike Olt, Jurickson Profar Representing Rangers

Lost in all the hoopla surrounding the All-Star Game is the always-interesting Futures Game, which falls on the Sunday prior to the Home Run Derby. This year, the Texas Rangers will have two players represent them in the Futures Game -- and one on each team. Third base prospect Mike Olt is on the U.S. Team, while Jurickson Profar, who may very well be the single best prospect in baseball, will be on the World Team.

Olt is having a phenomenal year, and will likely be at the center of trade talks if the Rangers choose to pursue Zack Greinke or Cole Hamels. Jon Daniels will likely have a difficult time surrendering Olt for a rental, even if the Rangers would be receiving an ace back in the deal.

Through July 3, Olt is hitting .302/.409/.597 with 22 home runs in just 278 at bats. Olt has drawn 48 walks and struck out 81 times as well.

Though he's blocked at third, the Rangers might be able to use him at first base -- which would give Texas a bit more leverage in trade talks.

As for Profar, well, there's not really enough superlatives for him. At just 19 years of age, Profar is hitting .293/.371/.479 in AA. Just think about that.

Profar is showing pretty good power, as evidenced by his slugging percentage. He's socked nine homers, 18 doubles and six triples so far this year, and has drawn 39 walks against just 49 strikeouts.

Again, he's 19. And he's probably the best prospect in baseball. And there's also no way he will be traded.

So, if you're a Rangers fan and you were looking for a reason to watch the Futures Game on Sunday, there you have it. You'll get to see two of the very best Rangers prospects, who just happen to be two of the very best prospects in baseball.

2012 MLB All-Star Game: Ron Washington Not Sorry For Picking Rangers

The Texas Rangers will send seven players to Kansas City for the All-Star Game. So does Ron Washington, who is managing the team, feel any remorse for having such a large portion of the squad?

Not really.

"I don't think the Texas Rangers have to apologize because we've got good players," AL manager Ron Washington of Texas said. "I certainly didn't pick my guys being selfish, I picked them very deserving of being All-Stars, bottom line."

Josh Hamilton, Mike Napoli, Adrian Beltre, Ian Kinsler, Matt Harrison, Joe Nathan and Elvis Andrus made the team.

Kinsler was perhaps the most controversial of the selections, as he is having a good but not great year, but his inclusion was from the players' selections, not Washington's.

Texas could add another player if Yu Darvish wins the Final Vote.

MLB All-Star Game 2012: Rangers Yu Darvish A Finalist For Last American League Spot

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Yu Darvish could become the eighth Ranger to earn a spot at the 2012 MLB All-Star game in Kansas City. Darvish has been selected as one of the five finalist to earn the final spot for the American League roster.

The others in contention are all pitchers in Kansas City Royals Jonathan Broxton, Los Angeles Angels Ernesto Frieri, Baltimore Orioles Jason Hammel and Chicago White Sox Jake Peavy.

Darvish is a worthy candidate to be an All-Star as he is 10-5, has a 3.57 ERA, 106 strike outs and a 1.38 WHIP.

Voting is already underway and it can be done over at MLB.com or TexasRangers.com and goes up until 3 p.m. CT on Thursday July 5. The announcement of who won the vote will take place shortly after the polls close.
