2012 Triple Crown: I'll Have Another Is The Early Favorite At The Belmont Stakes

I'll Have Another looked like a Triple Crown contender on Saturday, and the early odds for the Belmont Stakes have confirmed that. With Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes runner-up Bodemeister out of the field, it's hard to find a real threat to I'll Have Another.

Here are the early odds that are likely to fluctuate over the next three weeks:

I'll Have Another 3:2

Union Rags 9:2

Dullahan 5:1

Paynter 6:1

Optimizer 12:1

Mark Valeski 15:1

Alpha 18:1

Atigun 20:1

Five Sixteen 20:1

Rousing Sermon 20:1

Street Life 20:1

Guyana Star Dweej 30:1

Stealcase 30:1

A win at the Belmont Stakes would be the first Triple Crown in horse racing since Affirmed did it in 1978. I'll Have Another will have his shot when the field hits the track in New York on June 9.

2012 Preakness: I'll Have Another Comes From Behind To Win

The 137th running of the Preakness Stakes was an epic race that saw Kentucky Derby winner I'll Have Another came from behind on the final stretch to defeat favorite Bodemeister by a neck. Bodemeister was a 2-1 favorite to win the Preakness and started out to the lead right out of the gate.

The early leaders were Bodemeister then followed by Pretension, Creative Cause and I'll Have Another being four lengths behind. The leaders established a pack, breaking from four horses who fell a bit off the pace.

One the final stretch it was Bodemeister in the lead, followed by I'll Have Another who was mounting a furious comeback over the final 100 yards. I'll Have Another broke hard and somehow pulled off the victory, and now has a shot at horse racings triple crown.

The final leg of the triple crown takes place at the Belmont Stakes is the final leg of the triple crown and takes place in three weeks at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Preakness 2012: Updated Odds, Bodemeister Dips To A 2-1 Favorite

The odds have been updated one last time for the 137th running of the Preakness 2012, and Bodemeister is still the favorite with Kentucky Derby winner I'll Have Another has the second best odds and Daddy Nose Best comes in next.

Here are the final odds:

1 - Tiger Walk, 19-1
2 - Teeth of the Dog, 13-1
3 - Pretension, 25-1
4 - Zetterholm, 17-1
5 - Went the Day Well, 9-2
6 - Creative Cause, 5-1
7 - Bodemeister - 2-1
8 - Daddy Nose Best, 9-1
9 - I'll Have Another, 3-1
10 - Optimizer, 19-1
11 - Cozzetti, 24-1

Bodemeister odds actually dipped from earlier when it was at 8-5 and I'll Have Another changed from 5-2 to now being at 3-1. I'll Have Another is attempting to win the second leg of the Triple Crown and is positioned just one horse away from the Bodemeister. The race begins at 5:18 p.m. CT.

2012 Preakness Predictions And Odds

We're less than two hours away from the horses lining up in their post positions at the 2012 Preakness, but it's still not too late to place some bets on the race. We'll get to my predictions shortly, but first, here's a refresher for post positions and odds for the eleven horses in the field.

  1. Tiger Walk, 30-1
  2. Teeth of the Dog, 15-1
  3. Pretension, 30-1
  4. Zetterholm, 20-1
  5. Went The Day Well, 6-1
  6. Creative Cause, 6-1
  7. Bodemeister, 8-5
  8. Daddy Nose Best, 12-1
  9. I'll Have Another, 5-2
  10. Optimizer, 30-1
  11. Cozzetti, 30-1
As you can see, Bodemeister is the clear favorite. Don't bother wasting your time betting on Bodemeister on a single ticket -- it's not a good bet when you're only getting a payoff of almost what you bet in the first place.

Still, it's tough not to like Bodemeister to win the race, after the record times he set in the Kentucky Derby, before fading down the stretch run.

I'll take Bodemeister to win, Creative Cause to place and Daddy Nose Best to show. I do not believe that we'll see a run at the Triple Crown this year, as I don't believe the shorter tracker and smaller field benefits I'll Have Another.

2012 Preakness: Odds And How To Bet

The Preakness is coming up on Saturday, and if you're looking to bet on the race but don't know how -- don't worry, I'm here to help.

First things first, let's take a look at the update odds for the 2012 Preakness, sorted by post position:

  1. Tiger Walk, 30-1
  2. Teeth of the Dog, 15-1
  3. Pretension, 30-1
  4. Zetterholm, 20-1
  5. Went The Day Well, 6-1
  6. Creative Cause, 6-1
  7. Bodemeister, 8-5
  8. Daddy Nose Best, 12-1
  9. I'll Have Another, 5-2
  10. Optimizer, 30-1
  11. Cozzetti, 30-1
There are many different types of bets you can place. First, let's start by breaking down the basic straight bets.

WIN -- As simple as it sounds, you're betting on the horse to win.
PLACE -- You're betting on the horse to finish either first or second.
SHOW -- You're betting on the horse to finish first, second or third.

Things get a little trickier with the exotic bets, but they're still not that difficult to break down.

QUINELLA -- You select two horses, and they must finish in first and second place for you to win.
EXACTA -- You select two horses, and you must choose one to win and one to finish second. You only collect if the horses finish in the order you chose, unlike the quinella.
TRIFECTA -- You must select the first, second and third place horses in the exact order.
SUPERFECTA -- You must select the first, second, third and fourth place horses in the exact order.

For a simplified odds chart, the folks over at the Preakness' official website have you covered.

Below you'll find the payoffs on a $2 win ticket. Here's how you can figure out your payoff:

Lets look at the first odds on the chart (1-10). Multiply your bet amount ($2) by the first number in the odds (1). Then divide that number by the second number in the odds (10) and then add your bet amount to the total to get your payoff ($2X1=2, 2/10=.20, .20+$2=$2.20).

PAYOFF ON A $2 TICKET
1-10 $2.20 7-5 $4.80 4-1 $10.00 12-1 $26.00
1-5 $2.40 3-2 $5.00 9-2 $11.00 15-1 $32.00
2-5 $2.80 8-5 $5.20 5-1 $12.00 20-1 $42.00
1-2 $3.00 9-5 $5.60 6-1 $14.00 50-1 $102.00
3-5 $3.20 2-1 $6.00 7-1 $16.00 60-1 $122.00
4-5 $3.60 5-2 $7.00 8-1 $18.00 99-1 $200.00
1-1 $4.00 3-1 $8.00 9-1 $20.00
6-5 $4.40 7-2 $9.00 10-1 $22.00

So, there you have it -- the updated odds and how to place your bets. If you are going to gamble on this year's Preakness, please do so responsibly.

2012 Preakness: Odds, Post Positions And More

Odds for the 2012 Preakness were made available on Thursday morning, following Wednesday night's post position draw. As always, the post positions affect the odds, which is why bettors had to wait until Thursday to start placing bets on this year's Preakness.

There's no question that the odds will continue to change as bets come pouring in between now and Saturday evening, but here are the current odds for the 2012 Preakness, sorted by post positions.

  1. Tiger Walk, 30-1
  2. Teeth of the Dog, 15-1
  3. Pretension, 30-1
  4. Zetterholm, 20-1
  5. Went The Day Well, 6-1
  6. Creative Cause, 6-1
  7. Bodemeister, 8-5
  8. Daddy Nose Best, 12-1
  9. I'll Have Another, 5-2
  10. Optimizer, 30-1
  11. Cozzetti, 30-1
All eyes will be on post positions 7-9, with Daddy Nose Best sandwiched between the two favorites, Bodemeister and I'll Have Another. Both Bodemeister and I'll Have Another ran successfully in the Kentucky Derby, with Bodemeister setting record times up until the end, and with I'll Have Another coming roaring down the stretch to win the Run for the Roses.

2012 Preakness: Post Positions Announced

The all-important post positions for the 2012 Preakness have been announced, and odds for each horse will be out shortly thereafter. The eleven horse field features the Kentucky Derby champion I'll Have Another, who looks to inch closer to the Triple Crown, as well as the favorite Bodemeister, and local Dallas-area horse Daddy Nose Best.

The post positions for each horse are as follows:

  1. Tiger Walk
  2. Teeth of the Dog
  3. Pretension
  4. Zetterholm
  5. Went The Day Well
  6. Creative Cause
  7. Bodemeister
  8. Daddy Nose Best
  9. I'll Have Another
  10. Optimizer
  11. Cozzetti

It's certainly worth noting that the Preakness is a shorter race than the Kentucky Derby. The track at Churchill Downs is 1 and 1/4 miles long, whereas the track at the Preakness is 1 and 3/16 miles long.

We'll see what odds Daddy Nose Best comes in with out of the eighth post position. Many eyes will be on the horses next to him, I'll Have Another, but we'll see if Daddy Nose Best is the horse coming from the outside, and if he can spoil any Triple Crown ideas that I'll Have Another might have.

Bodemeister will still likely have the best odds of any horse in the race, and he'll also open alongside Daddy Nose Best, in the No. 7 post position.

2012 Preakness: Post Time, Odds And More

The second leg of the American horse racing Triple Crown is set to be held on Saturday, May 19, as I'll Have Another looks to move closer to making history. Though the Preakness isn't dubbed the Fastest Two Minutes in Sports like the Kentucky Derby is, it's still pretty fast -- especially since it's a shorter track compared to Churchill Downs. Post time is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. ET locally in Baltimore, 5:05 p.m. CT for those in the Dallas area. If you're planning on catching the action live, you'd better be by your television by then.

Though official odds won't be listed until Wednesday night after post positions are drawn, Bodemeister is the early favorite to win the race. Bodemeister set record times during the Kentucky Derby, but faded toward the end of the race, allowing I'll Have Another to steal the race from him. With the Preakness being a shorter track, Bodemeister is in prime position to capture one of horse racing's biggest titles at the 2012 Preakness.

2012 Preakness Contenders: Daddy Nose Best

Despite only finishing 10th in the Kentucky Derby, Daddy Nose Best will be running in the 2012 Preakness -- and he's a bit of a longshot to win this year's Preakness. Though the official odds won't be made available until after the post position draw on Wednesday night, unofficial odds have Daddy Nose Best at 15/1 odds to win the race.

Daddy Nose Best's owners are Cathy and Bob Zollars, who reside in Dallas, Texas. Not surprisingly, Daddy Nose Best is trained by a Texan as well, as Steve Asmussen of Laredo, Texas, is his trainer.

Prior to the Kentucky Derby, Daddy Nose Best had won back-to-back races, and three of his last four, dating back to last November. The 10th place finish by Daddy Nose Best at the Kentucky Derby was his worst finish of his career -- but it was also likely in the largest field that he's ever raced in.

The Preakness is a shorter track than the Kentucky Derby -- as the Derby is 1 and 1/4 miles, whereas the Preakness is 1 and 3/16. Daddy Nose Best's two most recent wins came on tracks that were 1 and 1/8 miles, so it's quite possible that Daddy Nose Best is trained more for a track like the Preakness rather than the Kentucky Derby.

We'll see where Daddy Nose Best will be breaking out of the post on Wednesday night when the post positions draw is held, and what odds he'll receive for the 2012 Preakness.
