North Texas Looking At Up To Six Candidates For Next Basketball Coach

When Johnny Jones returned to his alma mater, LSU, to rebuild the Tigers basketball program he left a North Texas Mean Green squad that was on the rise. In 11 seasons with the Mean Green Jones amassed a 190-146 record, and in a five-year stretch from 2007-11 North Texas won at least 20 games every season.

North Texas wanted to be the next mid-major program on the rise, and they'll need a new coach who can keep the Mean Green on the upward trend. So far there are six potential candidates to replace Jones. Here is the list:

Scott Cross (UT-Arlington head coach), Glynn Cyprien (Texas A&M assistant), Danny Kaspar (Stephen F. Austin head coach), Rob Lanier (Texas assistant), Scott Spinelli (Maryland assistant), Tony Benford (Marquette)

The North Texas is just one of four open head coaching positions remaining in college basketball, so expect the school to make a decision sooner rather than later.

North Texas AD Rick Villarreal Wants An Experienced Head Coach

The North Texas Mean Green are now in the market for a new basketball coach as Johnny Jones had reportedly been hired away to take over for his alma mater the LSU Tigers. Jones lifted North Texas to new heights by leading the school to five seasons of 20 wins which is one more than the school had in their previous 20 years.

North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal has come out and say that he does not want a coach just looking for his first job, but someone who has a track record of winning:

"You probably need somebody that you're not taking a chance he's pulling the trigger for the first time," Villarreal said. "That's my preference. As a program, we're at that point."

Even though North Texas' profile was raise up by Jones success over the past decade, Villarreal needs to realize that North Texas is in the Sun Belt and finding an experienced head coach may prove to be more difficult than he realizes.
