TCU vs. Baylor: Trevone Boykin's growing pains

When TCU starting quarterback Casey Pachall was suspended because of a DUI arrest, backup Trevone Boykin was forced to step up -- with only one practice under center -- before facing Iowa State. In the first Big 12 home game for TCU, Boykin would toss three interceptions as Iowa State would beat the Horned Frogs, 37-23.

TCU fell out of the AP Top 25 with the loss. "We wish we had a little bit more for [time for] it. The biggest thing is he doesn't have the experience to do it," Patterson said (courtesy of ESPN Dallas). "Trevone runs better, but just needs the experience of seeing the field better."

Iowa State is considered to have one of the best defenses in the country, and TCU had pulled to within 23-20, and then 30-23, in the fourth quarter before ultimately falling short. Patterson said that while the Cyclones may have a good defense, Boykin is expected to perform much better in the future.

"You're talking about playing your first Big 12 [game] and I consider Iowa State a pretty good defense," Patterson said. "The key is you can't throw interceptions, especially not for touchdowns, and you can't turn the ball over. He's got to do a better job of managing the game."

The Horned Frogs face Baylor on Saturday, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. CT.
