College World Series: Texas A&M Aggies Eliminated By California Golden Bears

The Texas A&M Aggies and Texas Longhorns suffered identical fates in the 2011 College World Series: both were eliminated in two games. The Aggies lost on Tuesday afternoon to the California Golden Bears 7-3, eliminating them from the College World Series.

The Aggies jumped out on top 1-0 in the fourth inning, but saw their lead quickly evaporate, as the Golden Bears struck for three runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead before adding three more in the sixth inning to go up 6-1. The Aggies would respond with two in the bottom half of the sixth, cutting the deficit to 6-3, but California would strike back in the seventh, adding another run to go up 7-3, a margin that California would win by.

Aggies starter Michael Wacha pitched six and two thirds innings, giving up seven runs (four earned) on nine hits while issuing two walks and striking out five. Wacha was partially undone by errors committed by center fielder Krey Bratson and third baseman Adam Smith.

Golden Bears starter Kyle Porter went six innings en route to being credited with the victory. Porter allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four. Matt Flemer struck out five in three innings of relief to notch the rare three-inning save.

The state of Texas, despite having two of the eight teams in the College World Series, managed to go winless. The Longhorns lost on Saturday to the Florida Gators before being eliminated yesterday by North Carolina. The Aggies join the Longhorns as being the only two teams eliminated thus far.

The Golden Bears will face the loser of the game between Virginia and South Carolina, which will be held at 6 p.m. CDT.
