Marc Stein: Utah Jazz Could Be Closing Deal For Al Jefferson

Marc Stein of ESPN reports that the Mavericks’ desire to include the dead weight salaries of Matt Carroll and DeShawn Stevenson slowed their talks with Minnesota to the point that the Utah Jazz look likely to win the bidding. Jazz CEO Greg Miller sent an optimistic tweet out Monday night:

I just approved a Jazz roster move that I’m very excited about. Planning to share details tomorrow.

Stein says that Utah appears more willing to take on Jefferson’s full contract.

Including Stevenson and Carroll would lessen the financial hit involved for Dallas in absorbing the three years and $42 million remaining on Jefferson’s deal, but sources say that Utah — apparently determined to replace Boozer’s inside scoring with Jefferson’s accomplished low-post game — has presented a more palatable offer to Minnesota.

ESPN Dallas: Al Jefferson Talks Moving Forward

According to a story from Marc Stein and Jeff Caplan, the Mavericks have relented on including Erick Dampier’s attractive contract, moving the discussion closer to a conclusion. The Utah Jazz are now involved as well. One hang-up in negotiations:

Sources told ESPNDallas.com that the Mavericks would ultimately consent to part with Dampier’s $13 million contract in a Jefferson swap if the Wolves also agree to take on the contracts of DeShawn Stevenson and Matt Carroll, thereby lessening the financial hit Dallas faces by absorbing the three years and $42 million remaining on Jefferson’s deal.

But Minnesota has thus far resisted Dallas’ attempts to include Stevenson and Carroll in trade discussions and would insist on two conditional future first-round picks if those players are included, sources said.

Mavericks' Pursuit Of Al Jefferson Growing More Serious?

Tim McMahon of ESPN DFW blogs that it is time to consider how Al Jefferson could fit on the Mavericks roster. McMahon suggests that talks could be progressing past the initial stages.

Trade talks with Minnesota have progressed to the point where it's time to start speculating about how Al Jefferson would fit with the Mavs.

He'd be by far the best low-post scorer the Mavs have had during the Dirk era. He'd fill the Mavs' need for quality depth at power forward and center.

The Mavericks have had interest in using their best trade asset - Erick Dampier's non-guaranteed contract - in a deal for Chris Paul, but the realization that New Orleans will not trade the star point guard could nudge Dallas closer to something short of a dream scenario.
