Local boy Jon Daniels, headed back to New York to attempt to qualify for the World Series, joined The FAN's Mike Francesa for twenty minutes to preview the ALCS and talk about the Mets.
You can listen to the entire interview here.
Lots of talk about Cliff Lee and getting over the hump of winning a playoff series, but Francesa did ask about the Mets. A piece of that exchange:
Francesa: Did the Mets make any overtures at you? Were they rebuffed by the franchise? I'm sure you were on their list. I heard you were on their list. How did that unfold? Did they (the Rangers) say no or were you allowed to interview and didn't? Did anything come up with you and the Mets?
Daniels: (pause) You know, a little uncomfortable topic for me to talk about and I don't think the focus should be on me at this point.
Francesa: But our audience cares a lot about that, and you are a bright, young guy. Did the Mets make a move at you or no?
Daniels: I think there's been a lot of speculation and innuendo and some things written and said, but, no, there's been no formal request to talk to me.
Francesa: Ok, so Texas hasn't rebuffed it. There's been none.
Francesa: Ok, good. I just wanted to get that cleared up, and that does surprise me. Is your contract up, are you a free agent after this year?
Daniels: No, what happened, and I think the reason that some of this has come up is that, I have one more year on my contract. When I originally negotiated it, it was with Tom Hicks and Tom owned the club. And not expecting him to sell, but one of the things in there was that if he does sell the team, I would have the opportunity to leave if I wasn't happy with the new ownership group. So I think that's the reason that a lot of this has been thrown out there.
Francesa: Gotcha, so you are free to leave if you choose to, by contract.
Daniels: You know, we have a great thing going on here, and like I said I'm uncomfortable. We have a very good team, a very good organization, and a lot of good things going on. We're in the playoffs, and I'd prefer the story not be me.
